***OKIES in the BYC III ***

~~I've been digging in the garden w/ the chickens today. Audra is a new boy (new in that he just decided to show his maleness) and he found a small stick and started doing a major "treat call". I laughed at him and told him he wasn't going to impress any ladies w/ a stick. A few minutes later I found a nice juicy grub and tossed it over to him. When he found it he did a quiet short treat call, if I hadn't been watching would have missed it, then gobbled it up before any girls heard him. lol

One of my pullets escaped from the coop and got pecked at by my big girls. She has a pretty nasty looking wound on her back. Should I try to save her or should I just kill her? Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

You got great advice above. You would be shocked at what a chicken can survive!! I have had couple bad gashes and never even needed to resort to stiches. I just cleaned the wounds, put antibacterial on it and quarantined them from the flock. That is key, if you put them back too soon they are likely to get injured again by curious flock members. Good luck, it look like she has a good chance!

So...I'm about to have a never ending parade of chicks in my house soon. I already have 18% grower crumbles. Can I get away with that or do I have to get 20-24% chick starter? Medicated feed or not? Been reading some stuff that medicated feed isn't all what it cracks up to be.

I use a big enough gauze square to cover the wound, cover it with triple antibiotic ointment then coat it with granulated sugar which I also packed into the wound after it has been cleaned. Then I use an ace bandage to hold the gauze on and change out ever couple of days. Usually you only have to do it for a week. It is amazing. I have seen it grow skin over flesh..

I use a 21% chick starter mixed with 28% game bird grower for most of my chicks.

Begin feeding baby chicks 'Medicated Starter Grower Feed' 18-20% up to 6 weeks of age. Change over to a non-medicated grower feed (high protein for feather growth 20+% protein) ' Game Bird Grower is very good. At 18 weeks change over to layer pellets 18% protein. This feed has the proper amount of calcium necessary for producing healthy egg shells. This will not harm the Roos in the flock. Pullets may begin laying at 20 week to 28 weeks old rain or shine.

No need to kill her! Looks like just the skin is gone. Their skin is so thin! My daughter's silkie was pecked on the neck and I thought it was worse but it just looked really bad. Healed very quickly. You will need to keep her from the others until it heals over. When you put her back make sure to keep an eye on her as they move her back into the group. You might just trim feathers around it so they don't get into the wound as it forms a scab. Also keeps it a little cleaner. Just keep applying Neosporin to it and it should be good! They will want to peck at red so there is a medicine (that I need to get to add to my chicken stuff) it is blue and will make the wound blue so they don't keep messing with it. I know someone on here can tell you what it is. We didn't have to use it on the silkie's neck but I know if there is anything larger on any of them I will need it. Chickens are VERY resilient. They surprise me all the time!
To clean the wound you can use saline (you can make your own with just boiling water and adding salt), or you can just use something that you would clean a wound on a person. Beta dine? Mild soap and water? I'm sure someone on here has a better idea.

OK Cochin experts...I have two roo's in my pen with 4 girls. One of the roo's is a little over a year and one is around 11 months. At what age do they pass puberty and start taking on roo duties? I have not seen the behavior, and the eggs aren't fertile.
