***OKIES in the BYC III ***

WOW... its been a little while since i've been on here.. I've been at school and my parents have been keeping up with my chickens while i've been gone.. It just now hit me that hatching season is upon us and my prized Rhodebar Roo i had raised up and bred last year was made a meal by a stray Jack Russell Terrier.. The same Jack Russell made a meal of all my Rhodebar pullets and cockerels about a month later.. I have one lone Rhodebar pullet now and she's healthy as ever but i lost her breeding partner.. I was a little upset..

Anyways... i was curious if there was anyone around the Oklahoma City/Shawnee/Edmond , Oklahoma area that might have any Rhodebar eggs my mom could hatch off in her elementary school classroom because i wont be able to supply her this year due to my loss..

I'm sorry, Nana :-( Good old hen friends are hard to lose
This weather is just crap. I've been pouring hot hot water over scratch & pellets along with heating fermented stuff up in the microwave. It makes me feel better to give them something steaming when it's so cold. These new Seramas loooove the fermented feed. Channing never has liked it, when his little Henlet has her face shoved in a bowl of it he stares at her like she's eating her own poo

I think the news said it was going to be close to 70 Friday?! What on earth is going on???

yep, so far these seramas won't touch it - the others love it, maybe they are gourmets??

this winter lover is ready for spring!

@NanaKat I am so sorry! breaks my heart every time!

Take a look at the chick below. I wish that the color was better in the picture. It has the chipmunk stripes with a pale grayish down. Kind of like in lavender or blue chicks. Then around the face some yellow. This chick came out of a blue egg but from my layer flock so will be a barnyard mix. I hatch several of these a year because I enjoy all the colors. As a chick this one is a beauty.

Looks like it might end up with some edging on it's feathers based on the chipmonk marking. The yellow on the face makes me think Wyandotte....will be interesting to see how it feathers.

@nanakat I'm so sorry to hear about Joy. Will you be hatching her two eggs? A little Joy is better than no Joy at all.

@ksane when you start breeding this year please put me on the list for tailless and tufted. I'm not asking for freebies, but I know you have gorgeous, healthy birds.
The two eggs were from other hens in the pen. She always laid mid morning so I'm thinking she settled on the eggs laid by others to keep them warm thru the night. I do have some of her eggs in the incubator right now. She was always a good brooder and momma.

Up until this spring we have only had barnyard mix chickens and they are all free range. So you never know what kind of chicks we would get!

This year I have new pens built and I can't wait to have some gorgeous purebred chickies!

Does everyone here mostly free range? Or do you have your chickens separated by breed?
I freerange my layer flock and older juveniles but have breed pens set up for the Cochin and Wyandotte during breeding season. When breeding season is over, all the birds including the bantams all get to free range. Each cock takes his selected hens to different areas around the barn and garden. Some venture as far as the hay storage area.....makes for some interesting egg hunts.
