***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Oh I love the special guy....you can see his little wing finger!  So he is totally naked on purpose? Or he hatched early and will eventually grow feathers... or who know?  Hope he makes it... featherless wings crossed!  :fl   and a mini hug for the guy!  :hugs

I want to know too about the feather less one!

And I like the ones with the red face fuzz.

Because of the hatcher problems I had only 5 chicks make it. One Speckled Sussex was very weak but I gave him yolk and water periodically thru out the evening, once in the night and again this morning. He is now wobbling around and eating starter. He is a lot stronger but still not as peppy as the other chicks. Hope he makes it.

Some have asked about shrinkwrapping. This is a badly wrapped chick; the poor baby was too tightly wrapped to even internally pip. Since I know the styrofoam bator does this a lot, I watch for external pips, then no additional zipping after another eight or so hours, and i will help those. If there's no pip on the 22nd day I candle and look for internal pips, and on those I will open them on the 23rd day if there's still no external pip. I don't fully remove the chick; I just open enough to moisten the internal membrane.

I helped six chicks yesterday, and they all finished hatching on their own and are doing well now. I didn't help this one because I couldn't detect an internal pip. All that shrinkwrapped and lived had a single pip hole, through which the egg lost moisture, and after that there was no additional shell breakage.

Those are definitely interesting chicks. I hope the special one makes it too!

Had my computer in the shop yesterday to correct problems, but I still cannot post on the board except when the occasional post comes to my email as this one did. Have no idea why. I read the forum once or twice a day, but usually cannot respond.

Vashi and I are looking forward to POOPS, but I cannot post there either. I've been to all except the very first one, and they are a lot of fun and fellowship.

Sorry to hear that your computer is still giving your trouble!

Sadly, we are going to miss Poops this year, but it sounds like it will be fun!

Our birds that Cheyenne picked out from you are doing great. We have the porcelain and lavender roo roaming out with the main flock. They hang out together and will tend to gang up on the girls entering and leaving the coop - as the majority of the yard is ruled by the lf roos. Every one has found his place out there though, and I've seen no conflicts. The paint roo shares his breeding pen with a very nice black roo (no idea where he came from - they were all supposed to be girls!) and four hens (two paint and two black) everybody is happy in there too. I tried to switch out the black roo with a showgirl (the one that Ksane got from you) but that was NOT a happening thing - so the paint black combo pen stays as it was and the showgirl has a pen and girls of his own. So far, I've hatched two babies from that pen - a black and paint. But am now getting quite a few eggs - with about 2 dozen (in different batches) in the bator. They are the sweetest nicest birds

loriemarler...did you get your coop finished during Spring break...just saw your thread

I did get it built but it is needing the wire and tarp. My husband took a job in Okulmogee so we had to buy him a travel trailer and get it set up but today after school I plan on wiring up some of the coop. It is hard when it is just me and my kids at home with DH 2 hours away. He is coming home this weekend to visit before going back to work :(

I did need to ask for advice. After I finish the coop I have a full grown trio and several chicks in the browsers. Should I put them in the new coop at the same time or will it be ok to put the older ones in and then slit add the chicks? Some if the chicks are fully feathered and getting big but some are not yet.

Also I can already tell done if the chicks are Roos. Can I put them in the coop with my older roo or do I need to keep all the boys seperate?

How old are your chicks? Fully feathered could be 4 weeks.....
I keep my juvenile chicks separate from the adults until they are at least 6 months old. The older birds will often chase young birds from the feeders.
If you decide to put them together, make sure there is a feeding/water station for the young birds that is protected from the adults by a cage panel with openings only the small birds can enter. They will need their own roost also.
