Isn't that the truth!!! LG SUCKS! Its what I have now and eventually I want something better. I have a still air and I believe it sucks even worse than the one with a fan. **sigh** It just sucks.

Reading all this talk about incubating eggs makes me really want to buy an incubator. Then I could order some eggs of chickens I've yet to find locally. (Hello frizzle bantam cochin) But, my husband (the voice of reason in our home) insists that's taking it to far given our time and size constraints! Oh well! It's on my "when my human children are bigger" list.
Also I have to get all these babies healed before I take on any more!

And I'm really hoping its not another dry year. I can't even bear to think about that. Summer is not exactly my favorite time of year.
Ashtree. You don't want to start incubating! I'm warning you that once you go there you never return the same! You will be an addict and there is no rehab for this addiction!!! It's honestly not that time consuming. I check on the bator a few times a day but that's it. When they are chicks they don't require a lot of work either. Oh... sorry. I'm not helping am I...

Shipped eggs have a miserably low hatch rate due to jostling during shipping.
I left that page and can't find who you were responding to... but who ever it was, yes shipping sucks. It may take a few weeks but try to find a local breeder. Shipping is a gamble though. I had good hatches and bad from shipping. Just try to get extra eggs if you can.

Famiily.

Cant deal with 'em. Wouldn't give 'em up for anything....
Amen! Only, it's my "out-laws". When my mom said "When you marry someone, just remember you marry his family too." She wasn't kidding! Ugh.

@muesky- Im excited to see pictures of the run when you post them! And glad to see someone else in the area. I lived in Little Axe a few years ago and really loved it. I'm really hoping within the year to sell our house and move either that way or Blanchard way.

I just woke up to 2 more dead chicks; the sick one that was getting better and the newest sick one from yesterday. So sad yet again. I barely slept last night because I was constantly checking them and feeding them. I feel like a bad chicken and human mom. My oldest son is very sensitive and this has been super hard on him. None of the other kids mind too much. Needless to say when I'm sure all the chicks are well we will be looking for more bantam cochin chicks. So if anyone in the area knows of any or has any let me know!
Once you get them on the Corrid take a deep breath. I had chicks get Cocci. I didn't know they had it until I saw that one of my cockerels had died. (RIP Pasty-butt). It was THEN that I started to see the bloody stool from the others. I read the symptoms and then I realized it was Cocci. They fluff up and tail down. Head is not held high. They become lethargic. They wouldn't drink or eat. I had to give some of them corid water by syringe. Two of them I had to wet feed with the corid water and stick little bits of it in the corner of their mouth (and it takes a LONG time to get them to fill that crop). If they get this bad then let us know and we can tell you how to feed and water by syringe properly. I saved all my babies and the two girls I did keep are doing really really well!

MY DAUGHTER'S SILKIE LAYED HER FIRST EGG TODAY!!!! WOOT WOOT! We have our pullets finally coming to the age! If I could get my darn Orp pullet to stop pecking her eggs/trying to eat them, then we would be doing good...
Wow that weather was crazy! The temp really dropped here and it's COLD. We have my son's baseball game tonight and I'm thinking I might take a blanket!

Today I caponized the 3 Dark Brahma cockerels I got from Dusti last Saturday-THEY ALL LIVED!! Dusti-all 3 are alive!!! I'm so glad! I didn't get every bit of the testicles on any one chick though so it's possible they'll all 3 not be full capons. At this point I don't care. I have 3 Dark Brahma babies and they're alive lol
I screwed up and forgot the most important tool, which is why there's going to be slips/not fully castrated. I don't know if I'll do it again in the future or not. I was just too dang scared they were going to die. I guess I have 3 more roosters probably, but there's worse things in life :)

if you don't mind me asking: which tool were you missing that made it hard to fully castrate them? I am trying to put together a kit for my sister and I to try and caponize some 8-10wks old cockerels mid May.

Does anyone on OK along the I-40 corridor or near hwy-75 from Tulsa to Henryetta raise Black Copper Marans? I am looking for hatching eggs or chicks available about mid May.
I sent u a PM w/ a name and phone # He has quite a few and some that just hatched. I've been told he has really nice birds. I know he just bought a new expensive rooster and is trying to sell the other rooster for $50.00. He said he's trying to breed for darker eggs and trades out his breeding stock when he finds ones that do.

I'm trying to carch up on reading. I don't know how many I have left but I know I want to answer some of the posts I've read

What is POOPs? Just getting started...
Visit the thread for P.O.O.P.S. using the link in my signature line. People of Oklahoma Poultry Swap, or maybe it's supposed to be Poultry Owners of Oklahoma Poultry Swap... They both work. P.O.O.P.S. is a gathering for chicken enthusiasts. Ducks, peafowl, geese, etc. are welcome, as are bunnies. People buy, sell, and swap birds: many will be bringing baby chicks. There will be a potluck lunch, games for the kids, handmade items, a raffle (to pay for the facilities), and lots of amazing people to visit throughout the day.

Yea I think I could seriously get into incubating. Especially with all the fancy breeds that I don't want to buy 25 chicks of online and Im a type A personality that likes staying busy. And yesterday no one could tell me that chicks don't require much work. Between kids and sickly chicks I only sat down long enough to get my toddlers to sleep!

I wish I had realized my chicks had cocci long before I did. I had no idea what to look for and then assumed the dying chick was due to mites (which was actually a separate no fun thing) Although all the chicks that have died (5 now) had mites worse than all the others-maybe stress related? I keep a very clean house and clean coops and cages but Im not feeling like a good chicken mom right now. But Im so glad the rest of the chicks are on meds and seem fine. PLEASE let this be it. I was syringe feeding yesterday but not the right stuff obviously because I didn't get corrid until this morning.

And yea for a silkie egg! I can't wait until mine start laying. Mainly because it means they're girls! But mine are much too young still. Right at 2 months. :)

The more I read about this the more I want to go!!!!

The Chinese tools are the way to go seriously. Much better then any other set or make shift tools out there. Poco pollo has a way to order them. She usually orders for several people who want them at a time. She may have some extra sets on hand I don't know.

Here's a picture of it. It's a long tweezer tool that's wide at the end. In hindsight I don't know how I managed to get any testicles at all out without this thing. Stupid on my part. I've had tools laid out and work table set up for 2 days plus re-read everything. Really weird how my mind completely missed the obvious. Here's the boys immediately after surgery and the tool. I posted the testicles on the caponizing thread. A little hesitant to post it here because some people get offended at the idea of caponizing. The boys did awesome and held very still. They were digging their heads into their food bowls *while I was carrying them and their bowl over to their individual boxes. (They're all together in a 4' x 2' cage now).
(click on the pic to see a closeup of the tool)
