***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Trying out a new DR Who episode. This one is reminiscent of Steven Kings "The Dome", but it is little earth gremlins that are doing it.
Met Ashtree today to deliver the silkie hen and chick. I think that they will have a great home!

So during our visit, noticed a young newly released boy limping. Caught him, looked more closely later and has his leg turned inwards near the ankle. Doh! he looks an awful lot like the one that I lowered the run onto (by accident) while scotching it over. D*&n it! He looked fine right afterwards and then I forgot. This was a few weeks ago. So, if it is broken, is it too late to fix? He really is getting around fine and keeping up with his buddies, just with a limp now. Any ideas?

They are both doing great! Friends already. I spent most of my free time today (which was not enough) watching them. Is there a such thing as a silkie that isn't hilarious??? Also my son LOVED his egg. He spent the whole car ride home trying to figure out how he could incubate it without a broody hen or incubator. So he put it in a box, covered it with feathers and then his sister and her insatiable curiousity grabbed the box and the egg broke. He cried so much I'm thinking about getting 1 or 2 fertile eggs now because I really don't need more chickens but I think he would really love the experience. But I guess I need to look into a small incubator first. Geez I wish a hen here would go broody. Anyway, great to meet you. I loved all your birds. Especially that barred rock rooster and your NNs. Made me really want some NNs. Hmm maybe I'll look for those eggs when I'm ready. Also, hope your boys foot is better. I looked at my sizzle Peaches foot and I'm just not sure it's bumblefoot. I see no puncture wound at all. It seems like real loose skin on her foot, almost like a blister. Still sound like bumblefoot?

We mostly finished the new purple (aka not grey) coop, just need to add a roosting bar. Starting the next coop maybe (fingers crossed) tomorrow. Just wondering, is the chicken list ever completely done? I feel like we finish 1 thing and add 3.

Now if I can trap the vole that is gnawing on my beets and carrots I'll be thrilled. Murdock the cat has been spending time in the garden and watching a wood pile outside the garden fence pretty close the past several days...hoping he gets it before I do.
Did you know that voles are monogamous and can raise several litters a year?

Yes! a good start for gardens this year! I struggle with vegetable growing in Oklahoma. The first year we were here was a mild Summer. I had a great garden and it tricked me into thinking growing here was just like Michigan.

My sugar snap peas haven't done well though. The seeds were old and only a few germinated. So many of my tomatoes have buds and even are quickly putting on fruit before they are big plants. I have been snipping the buds off to encourage bigger plants like crazy.

We found a new tomato, called "Sausage", that has long fruit that I can't wait to taste. We also got an "Abe Lincoln" tomato plant that I think I remember my grandmother growing. Anyone have any experience with that variety?

MJ...why are you pinching off the tomato buds...is that something you did in Michigan? Tomatoes are self pollinated and when temperatures reach the 90s will not set fruit. Let those buds go ahead and set some tomatoes for you. The plants will continue to grow....especially if they are indeterminate...vining...instead of determinate...patio. I grow Abe Lincoln. It is a good heirloom indeterminate and has a nice tasting tomato.

 
Robin - Look what happened yesterday : 0  Two broody hens.  It must be contagious.

I have 4 broody hens right now but only one is a Cochin!
- one Corronation Sussex, one Marans, one Showgirl, and one Lavender Cochin.
My Show girl is working on her second clutch. Her first chicks were crosses that I threw in to give here something to get hatched and get back to laying. Now she has been in with a Showgirl roo and the eggs are hers. I can't wait to see what Showgirl chicks look like.

My other Showgirl hen/pullet is still soooooo thin. She eats and I have wormed her. I just love her and don't know what to do to get here weight up. Any more suggestions?

Besides the worming strategies others have offered, have you given her probiotics and yogurt?

Glad to hear they are settling! On your girls foot -if it is not a swollen mass, then that does not sound like bumblefoot. Poor guy! Anytime you need some eggs, just let me know - You've seen the mix - they may or may not be fertile, but if they are - it will be interesting!

I love the brinsea incubators and they have a small version that only holds 6 eggs. But this is how chicken math starts so you might as well get a bigger one

Thank you! I had been pinching off blooms and did not that tomatoes don't sett fruit above 90*! No wonder I didn't get much fruit these last couple of years. It rarely is in the 90*s for long periods of time in MI and my first year gardening in OK, when I got loads of tomatoes from my garden, was a mild Summer.

My Showgirl died today. She had been doing better but........ She was always small, I wonder if she was a weak hatch? She was such a sweetheart. I will miss her a lot. I do have her brother and eggs under my Blue girl, Ezmeralda, so I hope I get more like her.

I agree. I had one LF Cochin go broody so she has 7 eggs, then another LF Cochin so gave her 10 eggs and now my OEGB hen is broody so she is sitting on silkie eggs..lol. I was wanting to have a broody hen but now seems like they are all wanting to go broody..lol Guess the old saying be careful what you wish for...

No kidding! If there weren't so many great breeds in so many different colors maybe I could feel done. I just need 1 of everything
