***OKIES in the BYC III ***

So yesterday I canned pickled beets and took baby chicks out to two broody hens. These were some that hatched Sunday and Monday 25 out of 34 eggs. Now I have babies waiting for a broody hen that is sitting on golf balls...want to make sure she is going to stick before I give her chicks. The chick in the bottom center of the first photo is a week old and was hock walking and even with a corrective measures has not improved. So I will have to cull it. Two of the babies in the little bunch responded within 12 hours of their correction for spraddle legs and I was able to cut the tether off both of them. In the second photo there are two Delaware Bantams. I let the juveniles out of their pen for the first time so they could freerange and took photos of the biddy Cochins out with their young brood. And I have to post updated pictures of the garden....things are growing quickly...I love flowers in the garden That cabbage is a new variety for us...it is called Mammoth...supposed to weigh in at 15 pounds..... We worked the big square and planted more tomatoes and peppers for fall...cucumbers, squash and okra were already there. and that is a Dessert Gold dwarf peach almost ready for picking. From the arbor and the flower os beebalm...smells citrusy too. A little Bluebird has made a home in one of the birdhouses and has become a sentry in the garden.
How beautiful everything looks I love bluebirds

I keep saying I want to be @nanakat when I grow up. I doubt that day ever comes.

I have a little girl (I hope, I hope! ) that has the most amazing eyes. She's one of the last Floyd girls. Where do eyes like this come from?

This picture doesn't do her eyes any justice.

Hi, I am traveling thru Oklahoma right now. Plan to come back and stay a bet, do some fishing. I am on YouTube, "travels with chickens". I am on a 2 year Odyssey, with chickens and a dog for company. Right now I am in Texas, to marrow I will be in Oklahoma, fallowing US 75 up yo I-44, on my way to visit a friend I haven't seen in 40 or so years.

No sure were I will go from there, maybe, Minn, or back to Oklahoma. Fishing is top on my list of TO-DOES. I have a 14' camper, a very old pick up truck. Hills and Mountains are hard but can do in reason, any suggestions on great chicken friendly place I could hunker down, fish and stay a month or two. Don't really want to work, but I could use a job for a short time. I'm 68 and retired, long story, but I refused to give up on my retirement plans just because money sometimes has wings and goes by-by sometimes. I just down sized and put my faith in God. I hope to attend some Bluegrass festivals. When I was working I would see signs advertising or directing people to them. I traveled 75 a lot as an OTD, but could never do anything. Nows my time. I will compromise but never give up. I have my camper, my chickens, and my dog and an old Pickup that will get me there, with prayer and TLC ( & and a checkbook).

Are you looking for a place to layover in Oklahoma for a couple of days??? I live in the Cushing area ... If you are coming up 75 it puts you coming through Henryetta, Okmulgee and such, so I am quite a bit to the West of there, BUT if you wind up coming back through Oklahoma again I have a nice place where you could spend a few days or longer. :) We have 20 acres, plenty of room to park a camper and truck, room for the dog (Hope it likes cats because I have two lol) and we have a pretty nice pond that is stocked with bass, catfish and croppie. My moms pond is even better than mine and most bass caught are 3-5lbs. You are more than welcome!

Thanks rinda, that's what I've been doing and I've opened up the coop really well so the air is flowing really well. I have a wire cage I'll put her in if that doesn't do it. I would love to have chicks, but hubby says no more chickens.

I'm gonna keep working on him.

Just in case I change my mind, do hens do this on a schedule, do they all get broody, etc?

Nope, you never can tell. And some go broody repeatedly (I've had one this spring go broody THREE times- and she's a "non-broody" breed!) and others never do no matter what you try.

Quote: Looking closely at his picture, I'd say he is one of the lightest golds I've ever seen. The only reason I still think he's gold is the gold in his saddle feathers. The wing triangle looks nearly cream which is really surprising to me. Bred to one of my cream girls you should get half cream and half gold (but cream carriers). Color isn't everything but it's nice to have that fixed in your flock and be able to work on other things! Proposed standard is found at www.creamlegbarclub.org. By the way- did that other baby girl with the leg problems end up making it?

Looks girl to me. And those are very unusual eyes- maybe they just haven't developed to adult coloring yet? That kind of eye mottling I tend to see when they are changing from "gawky teenagers" to young adult feathers.

I know it's the wrong season but if you come back through in the fall there is a fantastic Bluegrass and Chili Festival in Claremore, OK September 4-6.

:bow WOW Absolutely incredible. Im seriously in awe and I was so proud of our little garden :th
Thank you...we started this garden over 15 years ago when we moved to the farm. It has taken many years of adding compost and trees and plants as well as hard scape to get here...and the garden evolves a little more each year.
Nana, if you haven't already culled it, the chick that is "hock walking" probably has slipped Achilles Tendons. This can happen either because of a congenital defect where the "channels" for the Achilles Tendon did not develop correctly, or by accident. The accident doesn't have to be a noticeable one in a newly hatched chick, and usually shows up in a day or two after hatching. It is a correctable condition if caused by an accident, but not if it is a congenital defect. Isn't even difficult, but completely different from spraddle legs. If you haven't yet culled it or want to have info on correcting slipped Achilles Tendon(s), I can put that information on here. I've had success with several, and know several others who have also had success. The biggest problem is correctly identifying the condition.
I haven't culled the chick yet. We had a goose with a slipped tendon that I was able to splint successfully. I've checked then chick's tendons and really feel this is congenital. It never was able to get up on that foot. The other leg is normal and the chick moves by hopping on the good leg/foot.
Nana, your gardens and yard are absolutely beautiful! I'm proud of my little garden, as it is the first one of any size and extent in several years, but it is completely blitzed by yours! We've eaten Swiss Chard and Green beans from it several times so far this year, and harvested the first zucchini today. Okra, peppers, tomatoes and tomatillo are not far behind. You are an inspiration to us all from several standpoints. Don't know how you accomplish all you do!
Thank you. You are so kind. Like you, it helps to have a spouse who enjoys doing the same things and taking many breaks.
