***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Didn't he used to be darker? Every time I see a photo of him, he seems to get lighter, more pink now. Are you sure he's a "HE"?

He is getting lighter. I have second guessed myself on his gender, but really the getting lighter is more proof he is male. In fm the girls are usually more dark, and the boys tend to lighten from the fm and then become red / mulberry.

Okay, all, I have been trying to figure out just exactly how I can keep and house all the chickens I've been accumulating. I've decided I can't. Before I put it up on Craig's List, I thought I'd offer them up here...
I have one of Rinda's Cream Legbar roos, just about 12 weeks old. $20 (no crest)
I have two Old Path Farms Jubilee Orpington roos, about 13 weeks old. $25 each.

I have 2 bantam roos. One is a Gold Seabright. I don't know what the other is, but he is a friendly little thing. They were free to me. They'll be free to you.

I also have two EE roos. One is 30 weeks old, one is 19 weeks old. I am uncertain about those. Freezer camp is a possibility, but are they good for that? On that note, at what age should you cull them anyway? My Marans are 19 weeks old, starting to crow, but they don't feel very meaty just yet.

I'll post pics if anyone is interested. I am open to trade for the right chicks or hatching eggs.
I'd be interested in a Jubilee Orpington if still available. And are you getting rid of any Marans roos? couldn't pick up until next Wednesday if that's ok.

How is Sonny doing?

Sonny is doing fine. His non-broody girl does not listen well. She doesn't like to come back in when I need to let a different group out to free-range. Sonny comes back quickly. I've figured out that he will return in an instant if I have a handful of cracked corn or some chopped veggies. He's got a thing for a Saipan Jungle Fowl hen. He will stand by the layer pen until he gets her attention, and then he will dance like he's on stage. She watches him, but she doesn't approach. Her sisters are completely immune to his advances. What an odd couple they would make. I'll take some pictures of Sonny and his girls today.

I'm planning to take the eggs from Sonny's broody girl this weekend. She's been sitting and sitting, and nothing has hatched. The eggs Rafael won at POOPS (SFH) go into lock down tomorrow, so on Sunday I may be able to swap the eggs for chicks.

This is the Saipan hen that Sonny has the hots for. She's got that velociraptor look, but she's one of my sweetest, friendliest hens. Her eggs are still small, but I expect she will lay a medium-sized egg by the time she is full grown.

I haven't been on in a while. I love to see all the pictures you've posted, beautiful chicks, flowers and gardens. I recently nursed one of hens back to health who had gone broody and got overheated.

So good news there. But I lost a different hen Monday.

Not sure why, her breathing was crackley, so I'm thinking something respiratory and the heat combined. So far other chickens are doing well Praise the Lord!

This has spurred hubby to build me a bigger coop, I can't wait to get it.

I'll have room for more chickens. Yay!

My "johnny jump ups" (violas) that I planted in memory of my granddad and his mom, they were started from seed, so it took them a while just to get them this far. Mamaw's name was Viola. A couple of other arrangements I planted last month.

At times when I have the time to stand and watch the buns eat the forage I give them, I have been trying to give it to them in several small piles w/ each different leaf/plant to see what they like best. Today's selection in order of best to worst was: plantain, sunflower leaves, sweet potato leaves, raspberry leaves, lambs quarters. They didn't really eat the lamb's quarters, just nibbled and left them. I had given them the new growth tops of the lambs quarters.

I filled up the drying rack this morning and didn't even put a dent in the raspberries, seems I'll be drying raspberry leaves for a while.
