***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I keep forgetting to mention that my Peaches (who I did bumblefoot surgery on months ago) is all better. No limping at all. I did have to go back after the initial surgery and get some missed infection. It was much easier the 2nd time because I felt WAYYYYY more confident.

Im so happy to report she's a happy healthy girl and loves me again

And now that her foot doesn't hurt she roosts in her coop every night. Its darn cute, she's my only silkie that roosts at night.

Thanks @Ksane @Poco Pollo and all the other wise folks around here that gave me bumblefoot advice.

We got a "rare" chick as a bonus when we ordered the 15 chicks from McMurray. Don't know what it is yet but might be a Golden Pencilled Hamburg. My question is: though we had the chicks sexed there is only a 90% chance they are all female. The Rare chick has fuzzy feathers all down its legs (they are 4 weeks old). Does this mean she is a he? I have read that roosters have even wing feathers but we have a mix at this age. Any ideas?

Feathered legs are not a sex related thing, if a chicken is a feathered leg breed both male and female will have feathered legs.

Feather sexing on the wings is not doable unless you KNOW the parentage, it relys on having one parent come from a slow feathering line. Most attempts at feather sexing are 50/50

roughly the same as guessing! lol

someone asked about coconut fiber for nesting boxes well i don't know about how that would work but i did see where someone of facebook posted about theses and they are similar.

The 14" diameter coconut fiber linings I got for my Pigeons were $1.88 each, the ones in that link were $25 for 25 of them-that's a nice deal. I just may get those when the pigeons are done with this stack of coconut fibers.
Sublahara, chickens ingesting the fiber would certainly be a concern of mine :-/ My birds seem to line up for impacted crop surgery. But I'm not using them for chickens.

I'm so happy!!!!! You've jumped in with both feet lol! Congrats :)

Anyone know if there is a Newcastle auction tomorrow? I hope so, I need to get rid of (downsize) a few birds. I am thinking about putting in my coronation Sussex. They are such beautiful birds, but white birds at free range does not seem to be the best thing to do. Plus, their eggs will likely look too much like my barred rock eggs. sigh. What was I thinking when I got them .. oh, now I remember..... THEY'RE BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

Might be bring a Catdance bred silkie roo too. Not sure on that yet. Not sure how 25+ chicks in a box (or eggs in a carton) can grow so fast to fill up a whole coop - but there you go!

of course, I can just blame my DH - 'just take BOTH boxes' he says... grrrr

Ugh. Dead bird in the front yard. Totally whole, nothing visibly wrong. Just dead. Per my vet's instructions, I've disposed of it, but I'ms till paranoid. He said one dead bird isn't worth sending in as it could have hit a car and just bounced, or flew a little further etc. and it's expensive to get tested. I just wish I knew what it was.

could be a cat.

aren't you guys worried about them eating the long fibers?
I have never used them just thought someone might like the info on them since they were talking about beding options, they are weved togeter rather tightly but that dose not mean it would not be posable for a hen to pick out a fiber i know when i go some hatcherie chicks there was one in the bottom of the box and it didn't fall a part.
