A lot depends on the breeds. Some roosters are more aggressive than others. Getting hung up in chicken wire can be a problem if the birds are kick fighters.I've been trying to look this up but I can't figure out a shorter search title than "if roosters can see each other but not get to each other will there be aggression issues?"
What I'm thinking of doing is building one 400sq ft covered run and separating it down the middle-top to bottom (might use the chicken wire for the seperation) In one coop/run there will be silkies, the other run/coop randoms-the rooster will probably be a SFH. They will see each other unless I put some kind of curtain or boards there. What does everyone think? A non issue? Or it's gonna be crazy?
Can't really make out the saddle feathers on these three....but looking at the tail posture....I'm leaning towards the GL Wyandotte being pullets. Nice yellow legs!
Here are my gold laced wyandottes. All have thick legs. Not much for tail or saddle feathers.#1 & #2 have rose combs? (Not sure still learning combs) And #3 has a single comb? I know you can't see it in the pic.. stubborn chicken! Also, #1 and #2 have teeny tiny waddles and #3 has a bigger set of waddles. Thanks in advance for any suggestions on sex.
Feathered legs is characteristic of several breeds...Brahma, Cochin, D'Unccle.....not the difference between male and female. We got a "rare" chick as a bonus when we ordered the 15 chicks from McMurray. Don't know what it is yet but might be a Golden Pencilled Hamburg. My question is: though we had the chicks sexed there is only a 90% chance they are all female. The Rare chick has fuzzy feathers all down its legs (they are 4 weeks old). Does this mean she is a he? I have read that roosters have even wing feathers but we have a mix at this age. Any ideas?
Congratulations! They all look bright. I'm happy you got you SFH, that you've been wanting. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that you have pullets, and a roo, if you want one.
Congratulations to you too. As I've said before, I just love the babies. they're always so cute. I don't know about BR roos, but I know RIR over barred rock hen is the black sex link females.Best hatch ever! Out of 11 eggs that made it into lockdown - 9 hatched!!!! And one of the two wasput in 2 days later, so it has a few more days to go before it is declared nonhatched.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have so good a hatch! Two naked necks that look to be sired by the barred rock roos, couple of barred rock and barred rock mixes - the grey is likely a sex linked barred rock egg that did NOT get the barred rock gene, so I need to read up on which sex does. Then the brown one probably a blrw, the white - no idea whatsoever - these were all light colored eggs - I have the br and blrw and naked necks. The white's eggs looked closest to the nn eggs - though I have one or two birds that might lay similar eggs- no silkie feet or skin coloring - so not a silkie paint (besides, I'd recognize the egg.)
Not knowing is always the hardest thing for me. Sorry, I disagree w/ your vet, but don't be paranoid over it. (I'm the only one allowed to do that). Actually, testing is free by the state. They send your birds to Texas A and M, but they will start doing some testing here before too long. You can take your biirds to the Ag dept in OKC, or you can call the Ag. Dept(ask for poultry division) in OKC and they will have someone pick your bird up for you. It's all free and you don't have to be NPIP for them to do this. The only bad thing is they won't take birds or pick them up On Fridays or the week-ends because they only test during the week. It can't be over a day since your bird died and they have to be put in a ziplock bag in the fridge, not freezer. The reason is because they start to break down fast, and you won't get an accurate test, because of the decompostion.Ugh. Dead bird in the front yard. Totally whole, nothing visibly wrong. Just dead. Per my vet's instructions, I've disposed of it, but I'ms till paranoid. He said one dead bird isn't worth sending in as it could have hit a car and just bounced, or flew a little further etc. and it's expensive to get tested. I just wish I knew what it was.
As so many of us have told you, your photography is better than so many pros.. You really should send some in to different magazines. You might get rich and famous.
D'oh! I totally forgot about posting these! @ashtree these are the EE babies, all hatched from a blue colored blue egglayer and the father was most likely my blue-based SFH, Orlando. The last three are younger than the first four, but none of them have had flock exposure yet. Pick whichever two you want.

I thought I had hit multi on this too. Just thought that is really sweet. Not only are you a good chicken plus, mama, your a kind person, thinking of others@mjgigax has 1st dibs on the Sussex!! I'm dibbing for her since she's not here right now!!!
I'll take them all. It's so easy to say that. Used to say that, but it's too hard not knowing the sex. I have many roosters in freezer camp, but really don't think I can eat them b/c mom and dad are MY babies. Someone mentioned a rooster swap a long while back. Sometimes I feel part chicken because, I don't want to see or know what I eat.D'oh! Yea, Im just going to do 2 separate covered runs. Its not really going to be too much more work in the end. I just dont think I will be able to free range mine at allA lot depends on the breeds. Some roosters are more aggressive than others. Getting hung up in chicken wire can be a problem if the birds are kick fighters.
2x4 wire or chain link fencing is more sturdy than the chicken wire...more pricey but lasts longer. build it once and not having to repair is priceless
I have Wyandotte pens next to a Cochin pen and a Buckeye pen. There is no challenge from the Cochins, but the Buckeye and the Wyandotte fuss about once a week. It lasts a few minutes and they are done. The Cochin and Buckeye have no issues.
Wyandotte pen next to a Wyandotte pen...the roosters will flare feathers but usually leave each other alone.
Free ranging there are no issues. It is like they must protect their pen area.
Ksane is without a doubt a very very kind person. My son keeps making things for her because she's the bestest duck sitter ever.I thought I had hit multi on this too. Just thought that is really sweet. Not only are you a good chicken plus, mama, your a kind person, thinking of others

I will post some pictures of Floyd's kids. They are equally adorable. And I know I said I'd send you some pics of Floyd in his new home, so I really need to get over there with a camera and keep my word.
