***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Yeah we thought rabbits bred like ... rabbits too. Lol. Our first female got pregnant and gave birth to four big babies, but being a first time mom she didn't build a nest and they got too cold and died. Then she had her next litter of seven. They all lived. We thought that was great but ...

She got wry neck and died. So we bred two of her daughters. Both first time litters died. Second litters one of our turkeys killed all but two. Third litter we planned on bringing inside but they were born three days earlier than we planned and froze before we found them in the morning. Fourth round only one doe produced. We brought her inside where she had four babies ... until one of our cats ate two of them despite having them in a cage inside a fully covered box.

As soon as they were weaned, the doe died from unknown causes. Alive one minute, dead fifteen minutes later. Our other doe has so far avoided getting pregnant again despite numerous breeding attempts.

We are somewhat stymied by all of it and ready to throw in the towel. We love what meat we've gotten from them but we either need new breeding stock or a new housing set up or something. Its been a frustrating three years.

I would definitely switch to new breeding stock, but only after addressing whatever housing issues you have.

What is your housing set up, any pics?

With the sudden death I'd treat for cocci. We have hutches that are high off the ground. We got lucky with our first time mom. Shes a new zealand cross. She had 10 babies and raised 9. The only reason the 10th died is because I had to cull due to spina bifida. I'd do a housing eval... start with the easy stuff and move up from there. Good luck!

wry neck is different for rabbits than it is for chickens. It is caused by a pathogen, cocci is one type and I believe there may be a virus as well?
Have you googled it?

Poor wabbits :(

Here is a link about it. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=18+1803&aid=2371

I had one kit that got that a little while back. I think his started out as an ear infection. Its treatable if you get to it fast enough. Mine got so bad I had to put him down. It can be a bad deal. We do a cocci preventative where we put Corid in the water every day for 21 days. And then we will go a few months and do it again. We haven't had any troubles, of course, our rabbits are rarely on the ground.

Okay fellow Okies I have a few animals that need to be rehomed and I don't really trust craigslist so I thought I'd try here first. I have a male lion head rabbit for all you bun lovers. He was my nieces but my nephew turned out to be allergic. I took him in being nice but he doesn't fit our needs. I am wanting meat rabbits to breed and he is 100% pet so I feel as if I am wasting money feeding him when someone could be giving him the love he needs. I'm giving him away.. no food or cage just the bunny. I also have a barred frizzled Cochin bantam rooster. He is 7-8 months old. Nice boy, never had a problem with him whatsoever just he was supposed to be a she. He is the wrong kind of rooster I want for my flock. I've thought about culling him but all those feathers are intimidating for a newbie like me. I'm asking $10 for him or open to trades. If anyone is interested let me know. I'm about 15 minutes north of Tulsa. I'm going to try to take them to auction this Sat if they're still here.

I think I've missed out on like 100 posts. Hope all are doing well. @Kassaundra I love seeing pics of the actual people on here. I have a hard time keeping everyone straight. (I must be a visual learner.)

I so hope I don't catch the rabbit bug.

I lost two birds to the heat. Our daughter had a soccer tournament in Dallas, so we left our son in charge. Even the best list of to-do's can't always cover all the bases. Two girls were broody and clearly didn't leave the nest often enough. I'm a little tired of learning these lessons, but next time I will set up any broody hens in a markedly cooler environment.

I still have eggs in my Brinsea mini. I'm extremely impressed with the temperature regulation and simplicity of use. I hope I'm equally impressed with its hatch rate.

What's your hatch date? Mine go into lockdown tomorrow. I'm pretty nervous. 8/11 are doing great. I'm also impressed with the brinsea. My only complaint is our a/c broke a week ago so outside temperature is not stabilized. Oh well. Still rocking and the fluctuation has been minor.

And so sorry you lost 2 :( this heat is tough. It feels like a full time job keeping these babies cool.

I wouldn't take them to the auction. I did that last month and got only $2 a piece out of them and then had to pay the auction house its commission. It was not worth it. I'd sell to an individual if at all possible. Good luck!

On another note, my young rooster crowed for the first time! It was all crackly like a teenage boy! LOL!
