Anyone awake? Should I wait for newest one to fluff up and dry before moving them both? It took forever for the first to dry, so Im thinking Im just gonna put them in the box asap.

Too many questions I know….Im driving myself nuts!

you will probably be just fine to move them both if brooder is GOOD N Warm, but I usually wait till they are dry.

He'll dry faster under heat. I've taken them out wet, just put him under heat right away.

Still just 1, I went ahead and got him out because the other slowed down. It felt so good to hold the little guy. I did feel guilty tho, Arlo wanted to hold him. He named him Spike. We've given up hoping for girls.

Its going to be a long night, and even longer day tomorrow!!!!

Three hours since the last post and wondering about the chicks.

Was awakened at 4am to dear daughter coming in and saying that something under her chair smells. Really? I mean really?!

Good thing darling husband was home, seems like a thing for dad. So now the door opens all the way and in wafts the smell of skunk. Lovely.

Seems as though the backdoor got opened or was left open or something and a skunk wandered into the house. When I peaked, all I saw was a big bushy black and white tail poking out from under a small table.

DH was able to get it under a blanket and pick it up - says it was a 'baby' skunk. I don't know, though. It was a big tail!

I've never been so close to a skunk to know that what folks smell as skunk smell it just a watered down version of their stench.

Now the entire house smells (except for the barking dogs that found the skunk...I don't know how they didn't get sprayed). ... And here's the thing. I don't know that it sprayed, or where exactly. The smell is so strong everywhere that I wonder if it just came from the animal itself. It didn't defend itself from the dogs... maybe is just 'peed' itself in place?

Any ideas or advice? I am about to go and get bowls of vinegar placed about....

I am kind of used to/overwhelmed by the smell. But now I am worried about textile fair items - they will be entered by Wednesday...hope they don't stink.

I also hope that the smell isn't bad for the parrots or four chicks in the bathroom.

It's been five days since I've been on the thread. I've been busy at school, and will be busy all weekend with the grandkids.

Here are a few pictures I took when I got home from work today. This is Hercule's first daughter. All the rest of his chicks have been boys : \ Kass: Am I right in thinking this is a girl?

Dusti: Look at the fluffy tufts on the side of the drake's head. I may have to call him Curly.


Mitzi: Leon is a doll. He is attentive to his silkie girls. Such a gentleman.


Dusti: Remember the cheesy nest box I got at the Coweta auction? It's working great. I think I may make some more, but I don't plan to use six thousand screws on mine : 0

MJ: The Black-tailed Buff Marans are laying well. The hens still don't like to be handled, but the roos don't mind being picked up. They are putting on some weight, and it's probably becuase they are the first to race over and grab treats from me when I visit their pen.

Very nice and yes no doubt, she is a girl (is she a carrier?)

My first hour class set 24 eggs last Wednesday. We're expecting to see chicks on September 11th. Our first candling was yesterday, and I removed almost all the silkie eggs I got at an auction. Five of the silkie eggs never made it into the incubator, as they stank and had a filmy appearance. I wish people would observe proper egg-handling practices. Eggs older than three days shouldn't be in a carton for sale. The stinkers must have been over a month old

We used a reptile egg candling light. In a room without total darkness (window can't be covered completely), we were able to see growth and movement in all but the darkest eggs (Marans). One of the chocolate silkie eggs has a hyperactive chick growing in it. The little tyke repeatedly banged his head against the side of the egg as if he wanted out. My students were thrilled to see evidence of growth in the eggs. We'll draw cubes (and things made up of cubes, like buildings) when I set up the brooder. I'm planning to put a couple of chicks in a shallow box on my desk and use my document camera to project the image to the screen so students can make gesture drawings. There's a watercolor assignment that I'd love to do featuring baby chicks. We may have time to make a Sculpy sculpture of a chick as well.
