***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I am trying to find a silkie breeder that isn't over 2 hours away. I am wanting to start a small flock to sale. Is Silkies the right choice since they are so hard to find? TIA

That isn't a lot of info to go on. I do not sell as a rule chickens (like for profit) so if others that do sell often have opinions that differ from what I'm about to type feel free to correct anything that is not right.

Keeping chickens for "profit" isn't easy. Keeping chickens specifically to "sell" is risky at best. Most of us that have chickens sell from time to time, but I do not know of many who actually make any money to speak of. Chicken costs are highly iffy, Most times chickens can easily be bought for $10 or less, unless you have something quite special. Several on the okie thread have silkies and several have been raising them for many years. Silkies are easy to get, good silkies a little harder.

Sorry! I forgot to add that part!

I know of a lady who is in south Edmond if that is not too far. Her stock is show quality, and you will pay a bit more, but my birds are absolutely gorgeous!! ( I found her through the OSU extension office before I knew of BYC...)

Oh, I don't think I could weather that! I am not nearly as nice as you are. The dog would have disappeared about round two or three...

I took the bandages off and she is moving SO much better! (Mostly backwards, the vet says because it probably hurts her to go forward.) Heat lamp is off, blood is gone, Neosporin is slathered. She is in a pet crate in my kitchen. Starting antibiotic tonight. Whew! I am SO, SO, SO glad to be able to talk to everyone and glean from your experience!!! I cannot say THANK YOU enough!!!

Sorry! I didn't get very specific. I have looked the only places I know to look, which isn't many! Lol! The only people I see that have silkies for sale are a ways away. Like Wewoka or farther. I only found one on the silkies thread. I also looked at the NPIP website but only a couple have them listed and they don't list a phone number. I have also looked on Craigslist ( probably the worst) and those are farther than I want to drive. The hatchery websites are usually out or only ship eggs. I don't have an incubator yet and the shopping cost is crazy. Since it is so hard for me I was thinking that might be a good place to start. I want show quality for my kids . I know it won't be big business but I wanted a fun hobby that paid for itself. :p How can I find the people selling around my area? Tuttle, SW Okc. I have also contacted the auctions around me. They don't see them often. The people we bought our laying hens and the man who breeds bantam Cochins didn't know either. Hopefully this makes more sense.
