***OKIES in the BYC III ***

rigor is why they rest for 30 min.

Rigor will not pass in 30 minutes, it takes over 24, and sometimes longer if resting in the cold refrigerator. I can not answer how it wasn't tough as a child, but can say w/o a doubt if you are trying to eat any meat that is currently in rigor, might as well be eating chewing gum.

Visit a poultry house just before they are picked up for processing. You can't hardly walk through them for the lack of space available for them to stir around.

All my chickens are raised "free range" over 1/3 acre and I process much older then 8 weeks mine are not tough at all. I brine in salt water and rest to allow rigor to pass.

I hatched out 6 LF Salmon Favarolles from shipped eggs this spring and 3 made it and they are all three pullets that are about 5 months old. Does anyone know where I could possibly find a LF Favarolles Rooster close to the Tulsa/Broken Arrow/Coweta area like the one in the picture. The roosters are absolutely beautiful.
Probably my favorite breed :))) I've got 2 who are capons (my favorite died, I still want more) and 1 who is a slip (he's crowing). I had been going to give that one back to Shelbydog when this respiratory crap hit here. I told Dusti I'd just keep him here, I understand if she doesn't want him now. He's beautiful but seriously-you don't want one that's had any kind of sickness. He's surely a carrier and will spread it to yours. Mine have all been exposed to it and either died or are over it. Anyway- AWESOME beautiful sweet and gentle breed! I love them so much. Even the intact roosters get along fine with other roosters. I've had....5 or 6 Faverolles boys altogether. That's 1 rooster I'm *not through getting. And for the record Bantam Faverolles boys aren't like thg LF's at all. I have a beautiful Blue Salmon Bantam Fav boy and he's a little brat.

Are you trying to eat them when they are still in rigor?  8 week old chicks shouldn't be tough no matter how they were raised.
rigor is why they rest for 30 min.

When we butcher birds, the goe immediately into ice water after plucking or skinning. Then the final cleaning. Birds are dried off and bagged to rest I the refrigerator for 24 hours for bantam and quail and 36 hours for large fowl. Then when cooked, the of are brined overnight or 8 hours before roasting.

I'm glad to see this post! I was thinking of you all day, and I'm relieved to know you're home and doing well.

Do you still have the black bantam cochin cockerel available? I'll send you a PM in a few days

@YardBirdMom Im hoping these next 3 weeks go by quickly for you. It sounds so intense and how sad to be away from your husband and chickens.

Had a great time meeting @kelielliott today. Its not often people want to talk about silkies as much as I do. (except Arlo who is sitting next me reading all this)

@ashtree Awesome news! I love that Arlo loves his chickens SO MUCH. What a kind-hearted kiddo! Glad the girls are doing well. Let me know when they finally lay!

I caught my Jubilees playing around in the nest boxes. Hope they decide to lay soon.

I made some adjustments to my set-up...new roost ladders, etc. the barn area is a MESS. (I'm not good at cleaning as I go.) I still have a few little coops I want to finish, so I'm saving the cleaning til after this weekend. I'll post pics when I'm done. One is sentimental...story will come with the pics. :)

I'm sending good thoughts out for all, but especially @nanakat and @YardBirdMom.

I attended a dinner for a childhood cancer foundation this weekend. Cancer sucks. Period. Anytime you can make someone dealing with that nasty stuff feel better...do it.

Here's my pics for the day...

I still think I have 4 girls and 1 boy. I don't know if my black girl is actually black though. She's got a lot of brown on her...

I think I may have a bunch of true Cochins but in non-traditional colors. I'm sure there is a better word for that, but it eludes me. Oh well, I may still breed them, but I really wanted living incubators anyway.

Everyone is showing their beautiful birds so I had to show off my babies. These are Blue Double Laced Barnevelders. They are getting so big! I love them so much!
