While I was at physical therapy today, Big Blue died. He had been breeding a hen this morning so I was really surprised to find him. There was no evident cause....no marks, cuts or feather loss. Looked like he settled down for a nap under the truck like usual and never got up.

My little neighborl has gotten interested in chickens over this past year. She is 11 and is the daughter of a friend and always has loads of great questions. She came by today to pick out a little hen to go with her bantam OEBG rooster.she picked out a pretty Black Birchen. Picked up the hen and stroked her to calm the bird talking to it. Already a chicken whisperer. Her daddy just smiled the whole time.

Oh no, not big blue. He made such a lasting impression on Arlo and me. He was so big and elegant. We talk about him a lot. And Arlos favorite chicken in the world is a silkie named Little Blue. I'm sorry you lost 2 big beautiful boys this year.

And kids with chickens is beautiful. Its hard tho, they're not the heartiest creatures and we love em so much. Way too many life lessons, and it always seems to be the favorites.

@NanaKat, I'm so sorry about Big Blue :-( If you would like to have back or borrow the one I got from you, you're more than welcome. I believe he's Big Blue's son (?).

I was reading a thread on here about chickens molting and someone said that chickens do not have their first molt until they are 18 months old. I have chickens that are less then a year old going through molt right now, is this not normal?

I don't think it is accurate to say they NEVER molt until 18 months old. It depends on the age of the chickens when fall rolls around. If your chicks were hatched before about March, there is a good chance they will still molt in their first fall, but may or may not stop laying that first time through. Chick hatched after that and through the summer USUALLY don't. That has been my experience anyway.

Thanks Rinda, the chickens that are molting where hatched last fall so they are at a year old now, the ones that hatched in the spring/summer are not molting, that makes more since.
