***OKIES in the BYC III ***

So sorry you lost your sweet sweet girl! Let yourself grieve, it's not JUST a chicken!
X2 Im so sorry for your loss. I know she was really special to you and you worked so hard to make her life lovely.

Junebug just seized. I picked her up and cradled her, she opened her eyes, looked right at me, then laid her head over on my thumb, gave one last, soft chirp, and died. How is it I can lose a bird last week and just hope the poor thing didn't suffer, but this one dies and I'm so tore up? I'm really going to miss her.

So sorry for your loss

I'm sorry, Kyz. MiniB didn't make it either so Junebug will have a sweet little Serama to welcome her. Together they'll be ok and tell stories about me and you.

I'm sorry Mitzi that your little one didn't make it. I didn't remember reading that earlier.

You guys are making me cry. I haven't lost a bird in a while, but your accounts dredge up feelings I thought I had put aside. Some birds make one's heart heavy when they pass. Mitzi and Kelly, hugs to both of you.

Kelly and Mitz. Sorry for your losses. We always hurt, but I love Robin's story of Chicken Heaven and I believe it's that way for all we love. It doesn't make the hurt stop But it helps me, Hugs to u Both

Checked on the flock and herd (do three piggies make a herd?) before heading to Collinsville to attend the Fall Bazaar at Saint Therese Catholic Church. The piggies wanted a little exercise, so I let them run to the porch and back to their pen. We're still looking for names for the two girls. The male is Sir Francis. He's the friendliest of the three. Sir Francis is front left in both photos.

Oops! Here's what happens when you ask a two-year-old to "Hold this egg for a second," so that you can close the gate.

I'm still trying to figure out how my granddaughter managed to carry the egg safely from the barn to the power pole, but from the power pole on, gravity was mysteriously overwhelming. The egg fall less than twenty inches, but it made a CRACK noise so loud that the capons came running from the barn to investigate.

a group of pig is called a sounder but you could call them a herd if you want to too
here are some of my pigs

Oh Mitzi, I read this and started bawling all over again. I know how much you loved MiniB, and right now you have to be totally heartbroken. I'm so sorry you lost your sweet baby.

When I get to heaven there will be a chair under a tree in the middle of a green field. Junebug will be perched on the back of that chair waiting for me, just like she did here. Some day Bumpers will join her to stand in front of that chair, waiting for me to pick her up and cuddle her. There will be a lot of others there, too, chickens and dogs both. That's how I'll know it's heaven.

Mitzi and Kelly...losing a pet that has a special spot in your heart is difficult. So sorry for your losses.

@Tony O ...I have had a hen whose eggs have an air cell on the side of the egg. I do not hatch her eggs. The malposition of the air sack in an egg is determined by the journey thru the forming process before the calcium layer is added. I have found that eggs with the air sack in the wrong place produce chicks with less vigor. Be aware that egg shape and problems are inherited. If you must hatch your egg, set it air cell up or on it's side and hand rotate. Keep a close eye on the air cell to see that it is enlarging with evaporation. I no longer assist hatch unless the chick has fully zipped and I can see that the chick is shrunk wrapped due to low humidity.

Kellielliot... you mentioned earlier that you thought one of your eggs was a quitter because it was forming a red line. It is definitely a quitter. The blood leaves the veins and forms a blood ring when an embryo dies. Sounds like you will have a nice hatch otherwise. Keep an eye on your temperature. Even with a digital thermometer I use a carded thermometer. Low temperatures will delay your hatch by a day or two.

Cute pigs, Coral and Miohippus

Was having trouble posting last night.
Hope everyone is ready for the cold snap coming. We put new hay in all the outside coops to act as insulation for the ground roosters and made sure every pen has a rubber tub for water. Cleaned and put new hay in all the nest boxes too. The outside coops are big enough for feeders inside to keep the feed dry.
Should have test eggs hatching in a few days.
