***OKIES in the BYC III ***

(ill be wearing a shirt with "i have no idea whats going on". or maybe just write it on my forehead.)

I don't know you, but that sentence makes me like you already!

What Nanakat said. I got a splash Marans last year for $15.00 that I absolutely love. I also got the most wonderful blue Langshan pullets for a bit more from a woman who wins awards all over the place with her birds.

And the show gives you the opportunity to meet breeders who have good quality birds. If you get Ameraucanas from the people who show them, you can pretty much bet you're getting real Ameraucanas.

Where are you? We buy at a local coop who bags their own feeds. Were paying $7 for 50lbs of layer meal and sometimes its cheaper than that because prices fluctuate with grain pricing. Check the coops in your area. Some sell mixes, some don't. We buy everything there except rabbit feed because our rabbits don't do well on their blend for some reason.

Which local co-op are you buying from?

Newkirk. Layer meal was $8.50 today. But that's better than $13.50 it was at tractor supply. Ugh.

Well, a few weeks ago we had a big killing freeze coming, so I went out and picked all the mint that was easy to pic (long stemy stuff) I got 2 wally world sacs full. I pureed them w/ water in the blender and set the juice in the fridge for a few weeks to meld, seep, infuse whatever you want to call it. Today I have 2.5 gallons of prewine (mint) and a cookie sheet full of mint "cookies" for the rabbits.

Rabbits eat mint?? Cool. We are blending our own rabbit feed now so I'm on the lookout for any goodies I can throw their way. New buns and babies are thriving. I'll have to post pics.

Yes rabbits love mint, but be careful about feeding it to nursing does, it can dry them, so great for the first few days after weaning.

Arrived home from India around 9 p.m. yesterday, after our original return flight was canceled and rescheduled for the next day. Very happy to be home, and missed everyone.

Haven't been out to check the chickens yet--it's still dark--but we were in contact with our non-chicken raising young neighbors who were caring for them, and feel sure they were doing a good job. Was surprised that 14 chicks hatched about a week ago--thought a few might, but 14! Papa is a very nice blue silkie who is obviously also very fertile--he has 8 or 9 hens. It had been bitterly cold here for awhile, so I didn't expect much fertility. The broodies obviously were very dedicated. The neighbors should become chicken "people" soon. Matt said he enjoyed taking care of them and they've always planned to have a flock of their own.

So glad to hear you are home safely. congrats on the chicks. Sounds like you are a true enabler too.

You do not pay to come to the show. Parking is also free. You can look all you want. There are 2800 entries. Aisles with Breeds being judged will be temporarily blocked as a courtesy to the judges. There will also be a section set aside for birds for sale by the exhibitors. There will be some NICE birds for sale.
Lunch at Abuelito's is on Saturday the 13 th . You pay for your own lunch.

lol
i absolutely can't wait to go!

i just bought 14 birds so ill have to control myself and not try to buy everything in sight. :(

The show room opens at 7 a.m. to receive birds; judging starts at 9 a.m. There never has seemed to be an exact time the show is "open", and I've never seen anyone chased out as long as the doors are open to receive entries. Attendees and exhibitors just mingle at will, except in the rows that are blocked off as the judging is taking place. Same is true for the sale room. Sales/purchases can be made any time from 3 p.m. Friday, when the rooms are open, until the last person is gone. Most of the best birds will be purchased Friday evening, unless arrangements to hold certain birds are made with the breeders in advance.

When the judging is completed and the champions are picked, awards are handed out immediately and the show begins to wrap up. If you want to see all the birds, you should be there in the morning or early to mid-afternoon.

I'll have to do my Okies visiting during the show, because this is a silkies national and that group has a prearranged gathering for lunch, so I'll eat with that group of friends. I'll miss the Okies luncheon, but I'll see a lot of you there, I hope!
