***OKIES in the BYC III ***

A Frizzle! Cool! I hatched 11 Sizzle and Frizzle eggs a year ago and they were all regular Silkie or normal feathered except for 1 lone Frizzle (that Poco adopted) and 1 lone Sizzle. Evidently they're not easy to come by the old fashioned way.
I'm sorry but whats the old fashioned way?

yes, I'm really hoping that this one does well and maybe some day ill have more babies. but she/he is the only one i got right now. :(

i have had them in this pen for a while but use to always close the pop door on the coop at night but my dh put a fence around it for the goats and it is harder to get to so i have been leaving it open for several months i haven't had any problems till now have found 3 headless chickens recently

so didn't know if they were killed by a predictor or they turned on each other. I have seen several skunks around lately also i don't know if they would take the heads of or not.

The past 3 1/2 yrs we've lost about......15 to possums. They pull their heads off and throw them wherever :-( We put traps out for a few wks and always catch 2 or 3 possums. I think they're a lot more common than racoons.

@NanaKat I quoted for you Mitzi, I think she could see your original post since I could though.
Thank you!

Ashley, I appreciate the offer very much! But my plan is not to get any more girls. As I gradually lose more hens I'm going to eventually consolidate all the girls in one yard with a big building and all boys will just get the run of the place and have the other sheds and shelters, it's fenced. I'll keep a few dozen girls for eggs and have the freedom to take in boys here and there if I really really want them.
I've fought myself for years over having too many roosters, trying to resist them. If I'm going to spend $300 a month on food, then by God I'm going to have my boys

Please keep us and our son in your thoughts and prayers. He has been suffering with major depression for the past year or so. He is also autistic. He withdrew from college this week without letting anyone know and has now disappeared. He hasn't used his phone or his bank account for 5 days now. My dad saw him on Tuesday but that was the last contact anyone had apparently. We are in panic mode.

My prayers are lifted for your son and your family. Depression is made more difficult with autism. Hopefully your son is safe and will surface soon.

My original reason for posting-NanaKat, Don't eat my boys! It occurred to me you'd be at the Shawnee show and I', mot going to make it. I just can't trust myself not to come come with a dozen roosters.
So we can meet any day that's good for you. My boys don't wanna be nuggets!

Will someone quote this for NanaKat? My quote icon is missing and I want to make sure she sees it.
Mitzi, the Shawnee show is not until next weekend (the 13th). So if you want me to meet you this weekend, I can. Just let me know which day and when. I'm available all weekend. I'm just working on an Olaf costume for a friend.

We caught a skunk in a live trap day before yesterday. It had been digging in the dirt around the pump handle in the barn....a 12 inch section of dirt in a concrete floor. It dug under the concrete into the hen house chasing a mouse tunnel...all the birds were safe. But I filled the hole, baited the opening with rat poison and put cat food in the live trap right at the opening of the tunnel....nabbed the critter and put him out of my misery. We are now smelling a skunk outside the barn....must be another one.
2 x 4 inch wire will not keep out predators...they can scale the wire too. We have had owls take heads and consume flesh; skunks take heads off and suck the blood (little vampires!); coons will eat the crop and meat leaving the head still attached. Snakes are definite problems with any run and even a coop we think is secure. baited minnow traps work well for them. Dispose of the predator; don't relocate it. They return and your neighbors don't need the headache.

The old fashioned way is letting hens hatch their own eggs lol

Thanks everyone! My dad found him at a friends tonight. We're still not sure what is going on. We're going down tomorrow to find out and see what can be done. At least he's safe and I can breathe again. Being a parent never ends. The worries just change with time.
