***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well i know now what was killing my birds found a possum in my chicken coop tonight.  did't get my coop shut till after dark so i went in to make sure nothing was in there and sitting in a nesting box was a half grown possum.

This is great news! So glad your chickens are safe :) anyone know why possums just go for the head? Healthy brain their favorite part?

I've been told brain is the highest premium for nutrition.

No doubt, just didn't think a chicken brain was really big enough to be a meal for a possum. No offense to any chickens out there reading this.

it is pretty odd. some animals eat heads, some guts, some breasts. who knows... my dogs always seem to just eat off the back legs and the butt part of rodents they catch.

when one of my dogs killed a pullet over the summer he ate off the head first. maybe thats their method of killing and they get to the rest of the body later?

The brain is a nutrient powerhouse, full of good oil. Im guessing when a predator sees a coop full of chickens its similar to a bear in a creek full of salmon; eat the most nutritious stuff (skin on the salmon) and grab another one.

And my dog eats moles (geez we have a lot) and rats whole. The kids always give me graphic details.

Ashley, I seem to have lost my ability to PM??? I have four partridges, which includes one showgirl, that will be about two weeks old by the time of Shawnee. Also one partridge a little over a month old. I'll put them together today, and the older one should help keep the little ones warm if I take them to Shawnee.

My PMs are back--I guess it just required me to sign in again after we were gone.

There's probably a lot of truth to that. When my cats catch a rat they usually leave it up on the sidewalk for a few hours to show me, and usually the brain is eaten out. If I leave it there they finish the rest of it off later.

Well after a 3 month dry spell I got an egg today. It is most likely from my mixed girl Priscilla that I got from Artsyrobin. So nice to have an egg in the nestbox. Too bad it is just one a day lol

Possums down here like the whole chicken. Weasels are the only varmint I know of that only eats the brain. That would be a stomach full for them.
