***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Update on Sunshine. Sweet boy seems to have turned the corner! I didn't think he would make it through the night Tuesday night, and I was reading like a fiend in the hopes of finding something that would help him that I had access to. He had almost no sinus drainage and nothing in his throat, which means it was all in his lungs, he'd lost weight and wasn't eating or drinking. It turns out that ciprofloxacin has been found to be highly effective in some respiratory issues in poultry, so in desperation I raided my medicine cabinet and found half a bottle from last flu and cold season(I'd gotten a double dose, since I have a hard time kicking infections). I'm sure I didn't get the dosage right, but I ground a tiny bit up and dissolved it in water. The next morning he was still sick, but when I came out to see him, he jumped up on the edge of his tub, which was WAY better than he had been. When I got home last night he'd drunk all his water and eaten all his food, and had pooped like a chicken HORSE. And as chicken people know, where there's poop, there's hope!

This morning his chest sounds so much better and he's not whooping except for small sneeze/coughs occasionally. I'm not considering him out of the woods, but he's not on death's door now.

I'll treat him for a few more days, then he'll get another week of electrolytes, yogurt and egg to supplement his food. Poor boy will be treated like a king.

That would make a great tshirt! Chickens: Where There's Poop, There's Hope

My vet has given me the cipro. for chicken resp issues. It doesn't always work, but sometimes it does. For full sized birds - large - 1/3 tab twice a day, reg sized 1/4 tab twice a day, and youngsters or banties 1/8 tab twice a day. He also said that it was a 'safe' medicine and so giving too much, while not best, was not the worst thing either.

@Kyzmette
how is your boy doing tonight?  Do you still need the Denagaurd or does the Cipro seem to be working?

He's active and non-whooping! I'll order some Denegard to keep it on hand for the future, but thanks SO much for being there. Do you have any suggestions for the best place to order from?

It has been a long time since I've popped in here - hope everyone is well! Anyone in the Tulsa area have a SQ/BQ silkie hen or two? I have a white showgirl or 2 month-old porcelain silkie chicks from Geri Godina I could trade.

Brown is not a standard color in silkies, and I personally have never seen any--only someone's very early effort toward brown. Often when people have silkies that don't fit the standard colors, they name them a color themselves. That doesn't mean a lot. I know there are people actually working on browns, but they are not a "finished" color. Some good breeders are working on a lot of different color patterns, which is really exciting when you see their progress, but it usually takes quite a few years to get the result they are after. In order to be accepted into the standards, a certain number of people have to breed and show them a certain number of years, then (after a large fee is paid) There have to be, I believe a large number of birds--with a certain number of pullets, hens, cockerels and roosters, ( shown by at least five or six different breeders, at a specific show where they are judged very critically. It's hard to tell what color yours actually are. They could be blues with a little off color bleeding in. Blacks are pretty solid black, and most blues look mostly black, with lighter color on their undersides. Neither should have a brown look at all.

Here's a photo of the chocolate silkies when I first bought them. Their feathers were a rich, deep brown. They aren't the same color now, which is why I asked if hair color can be used on birds.

Here's what they look like now:

Sounds like he's going to make it.

They look sun-bleached in the first photo, to me their color looks more the correct "chocolate" color in the second pic. Are you getting eggs/chicks from them?? Chocolate silkies are on my "want" list!

I was planning to breed them in the spring, but because the color is so inconsistent, I will not be claiming the chicks are chocolates. Send me a PM in February and we'll talk about almost-chocolate chicks.
