***OKIES in the BYC III ***

We tried to give the broodies chicks yesterday.  Never have had a problem w/ them accepting chicks, but this batch of broodies weren't having any of it!  Had one that w/I a couple of minutes of having the chicks under her stood up and literally ran screaming from the nest box and didn't come back for a couple of hours.  It was soooooo funny, reminded me of giving the high schoolers the "real" baby doll to scare them about teen pregnancy.

About what time of day do you give chicks to broodies?

Every post I read says to introduce at dark. I usually do it a few hours before dark so I can observe and until now have not had a problem. I have a hard time bringing myself to doing it at dark where I can't observe, I see visions of dead and mutilated chicks in my head

I've got a few other day Olds I'm also wanting to slip in. Will a bantam cochin be able to care for 9 babies or should I just give her some a brood the rest myself? Sorry I have so many queations. I'm steping into new territory.

I've never had a bantam, let alone a bantam broody so hopefully someone w/ more bantam experience will answer.

My Marans eggs always hatch last. ?!? Does it have to do with the darkness of the shell exterior?
Yesterday was day 21 and I always wait one more day to open the hatcher. Today when I opened it 16 of 17 Olive Egger eggs, (Blue Copper Marans over Blue and Wheaten Ameraucanas) had hatched and the last one did not pip. Of my 16 Marans eggs in the hatcher 7 had hatched and 9 were pipped and some zipping and one had not pipped.
This happens with every hatch and the Marans chick don't show signs of being late; no spraddle legs or other weaknesses, just late.

I don't see that with my Marans- but it may be related to your specific line. I know when I was raising Isbars, they ALWAYS hatched 12-24 hours after EVERY other breed I raise.

Just heard the tigers near Tuttle have all been found and accounted for.

Phew!
