Wow Blanchard's auction had very few birds and chicks and also people. Came out happy tonight. Got 2 Cream Legbar Pullets, Trio of English Buff Orpingtons, and 6 Sapphire chicks. The birds were done by about 8:15.

English Orpingtons! Love those fluffy birds. Sorry I didn't to talk to you both, Hearts4animals.
I ventured out to Blanchard with neighbor Jack. It definitely was a chick buyers market.
After I got home, I candled eggs and put them in the hatcher. This week all 12 Olive Egger eggs, all 5 Showgirl eggs And all 26 Marans eggs were fertile and growing. No Cochin eggs were fertile again but they were collected before I plucked roosters' and hens' butts. Hope all those liberated cushion feathers make a difference. Two of 6 Chocolate Orpington eggs were fertile and growing, not great but better than last week's 0/8.
Our power went out at about 2:30 today but Jack had power at his house across the street so I took my youngest chicks over to his brooder. Our power came back on while we were at the auction otherwise I would have taken my eggs over to his incubator and hatcher too. I was counting my blessings. How many people have a neighbor with room in their brooders and Sportsman incubator and hatcher?!
Our side of the street is on a different line from Jack power. Ours goes out often. It sure gets old resetting clocks and everything else that is shut down when the power goes. DH heard a transformer blow when our power went out today and we both thought it would be hours before we would get our power back with all the storm damage and outages all over OKC.

Hi guys.  I joined a few years ago, had to give up my chickens but do still stop in occasionally to get a vicarious chicken fix.

For all you that enjoy reusing stuff:  Our metal garden shed blew over the other night, we were planning on replacing it anyway.  We have the sheet metal, cleaned and stacked in my p/u free for the taking.  It was an old Sears shed so the sheets are heavy gauge stuff.  It was an 8x10 ft shed.  We are in midtown Tulsa, easy on/off of the BA. Message me for more info.  Again, it is already taken apart, screws removed and stacked.  We also have some very usable 2x6s treated lumber from a deck we just took apart.  This is the kind of stuff I'd love to keep if we were still on the farm but it is considered eyesore in midtown.  Thanks for reading.  The key word here is FREE.

Do you still have your shed available? If so I can pick up tomorrow. Thanks

Looks like Kassward has dibbs but if for some reason Kass can't get it/doesn't want it, I would come pick it up.

Happy Mother's Day
To all our OKIE moms

Rain accumulation over three days has been 7.75 inches!
Our ponds are overflowing , including the newest pond we built in February. It hit overflow with yesterday's rain...12 feet at the deep end. The overflow on the pastures sloping to the ponds has been several inches high...never seen that much runoff since we purchased the property in 1996.
We checked for baby fish yesterday since they often are in the spillway after a rain. Good way to stock the new pond with perch.

My poor chickens are wading in mud in their pens, but the coops are dry. I did have water channels to carry the rains from the pens, but with the ground saturated as it is, even I am sinking with my mud boots. Will try to get those channels open to help dry out the pens as soon as I can.
More rain coming today.

Hopefully the next three days will give me a chance to clean out the nest boxes and carry out more dry hay to fill the nest boxes...their nest material has been getting muddy from their feet.

Got an unexpected surprise, this morning. Doing my usual morning routine, having my first cup of coffee, before going out to let the birds out (and today, look for downed trees and damage from the storm), I thought I heard some chirping and tapping, from inside my home brew incubator. It's several days early, (today is day 16), and we have a couple of wild finch nests on the front of the house, so I figured the chirping was from there. The tapping must be one of our six dogs, scratching, or moving around, in the house.
So, I finished my coffee, and headed over to the incubator, to turn the eggs, and as I was lifting the cardboard boxes on top of the Igloo Cooler Incubator, it was obvious, that the sounds were coming from in there. Sure enough, one was wobbling around a bit, all fluffed up, and another, was still pretty wet.
Both are Cuckoo Marans. Then, I thought about it. The day that I was loading up this incubator, my Cuckoo Marans broody, had been a bit overwhelmed with eggs, so I relieved her of a few, and put them in the incubator. Sure enough, there are them. I also have some I had to rescue from my broody Frizzle, who just gave up brooding, when I tried to put her in Broody Jail. They could be hatching, any day now, too.
Anyway, the one fluffy one, is in a nice warm brooder box, with some week old siblings, and I'm waiting on the other to fluff, before moving it, there, too.
I'm no mother, and biologically, I'm not even a father, but, I got a heck of a Mother's Day gift, this morning.

I was supposed to go into hatching mode, Tuesday. But, considering that I have two hatched, and several more that might hatch. Would it be safe to switch to hatch mode, two days early? Or should I split the difference, and wait until Monday?
