Does anyone that uses nipple waterers have a bird to sell? Or tips for convincing my girls to use them? I got a nipple waterer so they can have clean, fresh water and so when I am out of town for a couple days I know they won't run out. But I'm having trouble teaching them to use it. People say make sure it is the only water source but it's been so dang hot I can't risk them not figuring it out I've tried lots of things but now I feel like my last option is to just buy a chicken that's used to drinking that way

I've decided to call him Mossberg, for the Mossberg 930 Duck Commander Signature Semiautomatic Shotgun . He's immune to the taunts of the ducks. They laugh at the cats, too, and the cats just keep walking.

I've tried lots of things but now I feel like my last option is to just buy a chicken that's used to drinking that way

Firefly in my experience it is way too hot to let them depend on nipple waterers alone- it is possible they won't be able to drink enough to keep up with their needed water intake. Anyway you could set out a big water source, like a kiddie pool, and have a neighbor fill it every other day?

Predators took advantage of some storm damage and killed four of my Cornish cross chicks. A fifth chick is alive but without a beak. He's able to eat and drink, so I think he's going to make it. The tarp covering their cage ripped on one side, probably during the windiest part of the storm, so an opossum had access to one side that has 1' X 1" wire. Four headless meat birds and one opossum made a sorry sight this morning. The opossum had a tooth stuck in a space where two separate panels of wire overlapped, By the time I got back to the pen with a shovel, the monster had left his tooth and a bloody smudge behind.

I buried an old hen that expired during our hottest day last week, and I put a coyote trap over the burial mound. Tonight, there was a powerful skunk stink coming from the direction of the trap. I found the hen halfway dug up and the skunk stuck in the trap. I'm going to need two pair of gloves to get that smelly interloper our of the trap tomorrow. The last time I only wore one pair of gloves, and they tore. I had to wash my hands until they were red to get the smell off.

I got a new NN cockerel from Kassaundra. He's very tame, doesn't mind when the ducks laugh at him, and likes to sit up front. He called shotgun on the drive home.

So sorry to hear of your attacks! Seems you've had a real rough year with predators!

Oh Robin so sorry you had another loss. Considering the weather my birds have done very well. Did lose a few growers for one reason or another- a few stayed out in the rain and got chilled the others no reason- but my adults have done really well so far this summer. I lost one young rooster for no reason and had to put down a hen with a pendulous crop, and that's it since the rains finally stopped at the end of May.
