***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Roadrunner surprised me tonight with three chicks in a nest box. Unfortunately one was dead. There may be another because she had left the nest box and made a nest on the floor. I put the two live ones under her on the floor. That made her happy! I'll move the nest to another pen tomorrow.

We had water at 8:00 p.m., but it was just a trickle. By 9:00, I was able to water all the animals. DH says the main line was cut at the bridge between Muskogee and Taft. I lost a silkie hen and a black-tailed buff marans hen to the heat, and I think if I'd been able to wet their pens and give them puddles to stand in, they wouldn't have passed. I'm putting more containers of water into the chest freezer today to replace those that I used yesterday. Without that frozen water, I think I would have lost a lot more birds.

My first free-range group followed me out behind the barn when I fed the piggies. The trees provide shade, and there are lots of crickets in the grass early in the morning. Two capons and two hens: best friends.

I was right, there was a chick under her so there are three. There was another line one in the nest this am still wet so I'll try to get her to take it this evening. She had her three out this morning, clicking to them and showing them how chickens did things as "opposed to those stupid turkeys". Her words, not mine!

Hey all. I figured I ought to check in, as it's been some time. A few weeks ago, I wound up trying to do some building, in the heat of the day, and failed to hydrate. I wound up in the hospital for a few days with dehydration and heat exhaustion/heat stroke. Fortunately, a good friend was able to care for my birds as best he could, but I still lost a few. He couldn't be here with them, so he kept them cooped up, and some just couldn't handle that I the heat.
Anyway, it caused me to do some re-thinking of what I have here, and what I have going on. I'm going to scale way back on chickens, and focus on a few very specific breeds.
The good news is, just before I went in the hospital, I picked up 10 Marraduna Basque juveniles. 8 pullets and two cockerels. I'm going to keep these with the 4 hens I have, as well as my RIR's, and Black Australorps. Everything else, is going to be re-homed. Then, I want to build a very large, secure pen, with an automatic door, automatic feeders and waterers, and timed lighting, for winter. I'll forego the big incubator, in favor of a Hovabator Genesis, or two. Then, in Spring, I can use my breeding pens, then hatch out a few of each breed that I keep.
As for the immediate, I'm trying to decide, by tomorrow morning, whether to process, or treat a meat bird, with a sinus infection. He's one of my capons, and he needs to either be treated or processed, soon. I just found his infection, about an hour ago. And, I don't know for sure, what I want to do. He's fully mature, but could still grow a bit. I'm not ready to cook him, as my wife is out of town, for the next month. So, it's either freezer camp, or sinus cavity surgery, then treatment with Tylan, and waiting a lengthy time, before he could be processed.
Decisions....
Anyway, glad to be back. I'm feeling much better, but still not 100%.

Well a stupid snake killed one of my 9 week old crested cream legbar chicks. I moved the chicks outside to a pen in the horse barn and just found the dead chick with a slimy head.

Really glad you're doing better! The heat is brutal!
