Oh I love them! Waterfowl are my absolute favorite. The hardest part about moving back to town is not having ducks and geese. I keep toying with the idea of getting a muscovy hen but I'm not sure I want to risk getting attached and then getting caught :/ For now I'll just keep visiting the duck pond every week. I'm pretty sure people have dumped pets there. I've see an ancona, blue swedish, and several muscovy/muscovy crosses and some Chinese geese.

Any ideas what this is? He hatched 100% on his own and I only noticed it when I moved him to the brooder.

It is a small hernia of the spot the yolk sac attatched to the chick invitro. It should dry and fall off on it's own. DO NOT remove it. If it is in the way you can w/ sharp scissors and steady hand trim so it doesn't catch or pull, but it must be dry

Rudy had a huge hernia, about the size of his head, I had to bandage and support w/ coban "overalls" for over a week, and small bandages even longer.

I have a 4 x 8 bed of sweet potatoes. Yesterday I looked at it, it was overgrown and lush to the point of ridiculousness. It needed weeding, so I thought if the weatherman is right and it rains I'll get out today and weed it. So just now I went over to weed it and saw most of the leaves were slightly wilted, then I noticed the bed wasn't mounded up round w/ leaves and growth. The whole bed had been cut overnight, each stem, none of the grass was touched the stems cut and fell right where they were growing. Like a cut worm, but the whole bed and overnight and not a cut worm to be found anywhere in the bed today????????? What did this?????

Could be gopher or rats, possibly voles. Check to see if there are teeth marks on the roots . If there are no roots...then gophers...a whole family...have attacked your beds.

If it is teeth marks on the stems and the tops of the root crop, then it was rats or voles.
Rabbits only eat the leaves.

You can check under one vine and pretty much know.
A 4x8 bed was a lot of stems!

No teeth marks anywhere. Yes, lots and lot of stems w/ clean single cuts.
