Mine growl and fuss but don't peck me.

Same with mine. They have a tendency to go broody about the same time if they are penned together. It is not unusual for a Cochin to join another breed on a broody nest. I have a first time mother Cochin who shared a nest with a black Wyandotte hen who was also sitting on her first nest. Between them, they hatched one chick and are sharing the responsibilities. I should have given them eggs to hatch, but with the heat at the time they started, there weren't fertile eggs.

Anyone raised/considered raising their egg prices recently? I have been charging $2.50 for a dozen (from free range hens). That seems like less than most of the eggs at the grocery store nowadays. I'm thinking maybe $3.50 for 1 doz, $6 for 2.

I agree. Eggs are sitting at nearly $4 per doz at the store last time I looked, I think you should raise it at least to $3. The $3.50 sounds good. But depends on your customer base!!

Last Saturday, was my final sale on eggs, at the Sallisaw Farmer's market. I've been paring down my layers, and I'm getting enough for us, and not enough to sell. But, I'd raised my price to $3.00 a dozen, $4.50 an 18, and $7 a flat, back in June. There will be those who squawk at the price. But, I remind them that WalMart was over $3.50 a dozen, for comparable eggs. Some folks just need to complain. Others are happy to get quality eggs at a reasonable price. I was selling out of 240-300 eggs, every Saturday morning.

No complaints at all. I sent out an email at work and got more requests than I have the capacity to fill with my small flock. I may have set the price too low, but my costs haven't really changed. I don't want to gouge my friends anyway.

Grand kids had a stomach virus yesterday. They were sad to miss a day at Lonny and Rinda's. They're feeling better today, but I'm still not keen on taking them farther than the front gate. We've had to clean up a lot of oops messes, and I don't want to be too far from the washer and dryer.

I'll be processing birds tomorrow afternoon. Thanks, Lonny, for bringing the plucker. I've noted your recommendations and hope to have it turning stronger before the next time you want to borrow it. Brabanters are the only breed I keep that have enough patience to hang out with the Cornish Cross. The CC are a slow bunch, and their lack of common sense frustrates most of my groups that free range. My Brabanters are like the gifted kids: tolerant and quick to make allowances for those who need a little extra consideration.


The girls keep talking about the great adventure to "The Road". The kids had been in bed most of the day, so we made a field trip out of opening the pasture gate for Lonny.

Glad the grands are feeling better today.

I think w/ the cx it's more about them being babies then "lack of chicken sense", they really don't get to develop much past the "toddler" stage.

Rinda, Nice freezer camp! It is always a sense of accomplishment to see the finished product from all the feed, care and hard work raising them.
