***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Moved 17 day old chicks and 3 day olds to the Black Wyandotte broody hen. She was thrilled to have new babies. She had brooded 20 chicks earlier this year and 16 made it to the grow out pen. She went broody again 2 weeks ago and was sitting on dud eggs she had accumulated from other hens in the layer room. I moved her to a nursery cage yesterday with her remaining two eggs and gave her the chicks this morning before daylight.

So far we have 16 Coturnix quail in the hatcher...will move them to the brooder when the last two are dry.

I'll be working on my last crate coop today and need to mow the yard.
I've been painting these white on the outside.

Then I need to scrape and prime the roof of the Bantam pen....converted from a goal trailer...remember this creation?
I put hanging roost made from cedar limbs in there and still need to make a permanent winter coop up under the roof. Temporarily they have a small 3 foot by 18 inch open faced coop to get out of the weather if they choose. It is filled with 9 Bantam roosters.

Retirement is grand!

I know this has been asked before, but does anyone know who I would contact to see what the ordinance is for having chickens in town for Broken Arrow? Thanks

Let us know for sure if you find out. I've always been told the limit was 5 hens, no roosters, but the ordinances actually don't state unless it is somewhere else I'm not seeing.

Even Tulsa allows chickens, just not roos. But the little town of Grove doesn't allow any at all!

Technically Tulsa allows "6 chickens" but yes if roosters run afoul of noise ordinances you will be asked to get rid of them.

As a side note- Tulsa also allows 4 beehives per lot and Broken Arrow allows one beehive per 2500 sf of lot space. :)

Animal control or code enforcement will give you the best answer but from a quick look at the municipal code it looks like you can have 5 chickens in a residential zoned area. They categorize chickens in with "other animals" and then limit animals to 5. Also your coop must be 40 ft from any residence or business. Roosters must be 150 ft from any residence. No birds can be kept within 150 ft of a food service location or school.

Here is the link to Broken Arrows Municipal Code. Animal keeping is Chapter 5.

I know it's like a million degrees right now but fall gets busy with hunting real fast.
Installed the heat lamp and temperature controlled plug and cored a hole for the extension cord.

I'm sure hoping that temp controlled plug works.

Cored to run extension cord in.

I reinstalled the plug to keep out wasps n such. I'll caulk the extension cord in to weatherproof it when it's time.

Thoughts? Comments? Extreme laughter and finger pointing!?!

These crate coops are perfect for breeding bantams! Where are you getting the crates from?

There is a place in Shawnee...we might have it...that gets them in from time to time.
I use these coops for a trio or quad of large fowl. The nest box is big enough for two hens and I put roost bars in them too. The lids for the nest box and the roof open for ventilation.
I'm installing a gate on the opening made from 1/2 " x 1" hardware wire.
Feeder is inside and water is outside.

Well, my new coop plans have been submitted to committee and were quickly rejected. Apparently although I have no problems with a 12' by 50' coop and run others would prefer that the chicken coop not be the second largest building on the property (my solution of increasing the size of my shop was not met well). I think there is a disagreement on the number of chickens that will eventually inhabit the back yard. I suppose I'm headed back to the drawing board. My new approach is going to be one medium sized coop with a few smaller coops or tractors. The chicken yard is around 1/4 acre and the front yard is >1 acre. I'd love to allow them to free range in the front I just have to figure out the logistics of keeping the chickens from crossing the road.

In going over my plans the total size was 12' x 40' not 50'. I could probably add a room to make up the difference as if I built a coop and run that size I'd probably be sleeping in it.:D
