***OKIES in the BYC III ***

This is rather urgent. We had a chicken die this morning suddenly. I mean, she died overnight but she wasn't acting strange or anything yesterday when we put her up. Is there by chance any one who is a chicken expert located in the Choctaw area? This is the third loss we've experienced. The second of which we have no reasons behind

How old are they? 3 to die over how long of a time? Are the conditions the same for all 3? Have you had any changes in environment or food or anything else? Are they free range so they could be getting into something or are they confined to a run?

They are 7 months. The first one died by an attack, but the second one, a turkey, was sick for a week and died in a confined area away from the others. We didn't know the reason behind his death. But we burned him and bleached the area. He died two weeks ago but was sick for a full week. They are all free ranged. This hen died overnight. Didn't really show signs of sickness but I'm going to be honest, she is our friends chicken. She lives on our property and I wasn't really paying attention to her chickens. But I do know they were all acting fine yesterday.

So not all dying from the same thing, it doesn't sound to me like you have an infectious problem. 7 months age is the beginning of laying, chickens are very good at hiding medical problems, my first thought for that age would be a laying problem, my second guess would be something she got into while free ranging, a poison, or like a rodent that had been poisoned. If you still have the chicken I would do a necropsy you could see if there was an obvious laying issue.

We (my husband and I) did a necropsy on her. She was cold and pretty stiff on the outside but the inside was still slightly warm. So she probably died within the past 6 hours. We found that the crop was full, almost the size of a tennis ball, maybe a little smaller and the stomach was completely full and hard. There was nothing unusual in either, the contents were feed, grass, a little bit of scratch, several acorns, and a few small pebbles. Her reproductive parts all looked fine, no signs of stress or blockage, and no eggs stuck. However she did have a mucusy substance coming out of her vent, but not a lot of it. There were no signs of worms in anything. The one thing that was concerning is both the liver and the spleen appeared to be darker than we expected and seemed to have dark speckling on it (we took pictures if that would be of any help). The darkening may have been due to how long the hen has been dead. But we are unsure.

Another thing worth mentioning is that our friend did have one hen laying eggs about every other day before the turkey died. Once we put them all on antibiotics (albeit not long enough), the hen stopped laying and hasn't laid an egg in a week and a half. We originally thought, when we found this chicken dead, that she was the one laying and she had a blockage in her oviduct. But we are assuming that is no longer the case after the necropsy.

Thank you for taking the time to help us with this. We are worrying so much because we don't want some disease to come in and take our flock out (our 21 eleven-week-old chickens).

Yes post the pics, if you are worried about them being to graphic you can hide them in the "spoiler" in the comment where you have to click on the spoiler button to see them. Just upload them as usual then highlight the pics and click on the black idea box next to the paper clip in the above icons, it will hide whatever is highlighted in the actual comment, but anyone can click to see.

You can still see the pics while writing your comment, but see a slight pink box around the pic you know it is in the spoiler.

That's fine, they aren't too graphic, just didn't want to offend anyone! Haha!!
