***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Sorry to miss you NanaKat. I was extremely tired, having been working on a new guinea fowl pen l week--wasn't building it myself, but had supervise pretty closely and then Vashi and I put up the wire walls; not quite finished yet. Built the old guinea pen around 20 years ago, and expansions and repairs are now too far gone to continue on it.

I think I got to see just about all the rest our "gang" and enjoyed it a lot! Didn't win any top honors (got several best or reserve of variety and my beautiful paint silkie pullet won best non standard variety), but my birds showed well and I sold all I brought to sell. I'm now way down to 45 birds; usually have from 60 to 120. No babies now. I did buy one really nice bearded white naked neck silkie (showgirl) cockerel. That means I have only two more males than pens.

I was trying to take advantage of the weather last week but didn't get much done what with Christmas shopping, etc.

A skunk got in my main coop and killed 3 of my RRR from last springs hatch. He was arrested by my grandson and his friend, convicted, and went before the firing squad. He has been buried in an unmarked grave. Grandson and friend were slightly wounded by spray but will recover. The wounds did cause their temporary banishment from the house.

The skunk only ate the birds heads.

Wish I could have stayed to see all the winners. I am already crazy about the little paint girl I got :)
I have only 6 breeding pens that means I can have only 6 roosters. That isn't enough!

I just got a message from a gal in tulsa, she had to rehome her chickens and has a red heeler she needs to rehome, she has never free ranged with the chickens but has not shown aggression to them, and will warn of hawks, spayed - i'll get some pics if anyone is interested- this is what she wrote me on the dog-

Just Joined the BYC a few days ago and it was recommend that I throw a shout-out to all neighbors.  So...Howdy Ya'll.

I'm really excited to be here,  Just getting started with raising chickens,  My first set of hens will be here in May and I have started building their new home. I'm sure I will have lots of questions for you guys, so thanks in advance for all your support.

:welcome and please share with us about your new hens and your coop. Always interested in what folks like.

Some pics of the new littles and their mom.

Two look like this they hatched from the white eggs

This little one is the one w/ the hard hatch, it came from the darkest eggs.

Two of these hatched from light brown eggs.

Kass - The babies look happy with their momma. Maybe we can figure out the crosses when they get a little bigger. My white egg layers are Cream Brabanter and White Leghorn. Looks like Black Copper Marans influence with the white egg babies. I do have a couple roos that are Black Copper Marnas X Black Java, so maybe they mingled with the Brabanter or White leghorn hens.

For chicks with feathered legs, theres got to be a connection to the Black Tailed Buff Marans and the BCM crosses, which both have feathered legs.

Chipmunk looking chicks are most likely creole Penedesenca. Those will be pure bred, since my Penedesenca have their own enclosure. They're among my best layers.
