***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thanks NanaKat ... actually I am a grandmother too ... just didn't expect that, but it is easy to pull and I will just throw it on top of the dried straw (it is really thick and tall/ taller than the tomatoes).

Since I am admitting how "green" I am at all this, I would like to ask one more question.
This is the first year we are buying 1/4 of a cow from a farmer that grass feeds to processing.  Although I see cows in pastures not far from where we live, I am clueless about who owns them, so I found a place online that is close to the Texas border.  Wanting to buy 1/4 cow every year (said everyone will get equal cuts of meat so that sounds good) but he sent me an email saying that in 2018 he is going to discontinue offering this as it is too much work for him as he is doing it by himself.  Said if I pay him a deposit this year for 2018 I will be able to get my order that year, but he didn't mention any of this on his website.  I have paid him a deposit for the beef this year and am just waiting for him to process to complete this years order which is supposed to be sometime this month.  The deposit wasn't a lot comparatively speaking to total cost so am not anticipating any problems this year.

Where can I find other options for buying 1/4 cow that is grass fed to processing?  Or do most farmers grass feed until processing?  Should I be uncomfortable about him not putting this information on his website?  Would appreciate advice or PM me please.  Sorry to ask so many questions, and hope I am not making you uncomfortable by asking.

This question is for everyone.

Thanks for info ... see they sell pork also so will probably drive there and ask them about the beef while we're there. Think we are good on beef this year because I think that farmer will deliver as promised (and think we'll probably pass on the 2018 thing just because we don't know what to think of that). Live east of OKC but would like to go for a nice car ride ... been a while.

I'm heading home with chicks. Should I show the chicks to the Broodys before dark and see how interested they are or just put them under them at night and get up early in the morning to see how they behave?

So. I'm back. Too long a story to tell but I feel like spring has renewed me much as it has done for the earth. The 3 pretty birds here are all I can handle. I enjoy you all so much. Hope to be checking in more frequently.

Both of my girls were much too aware to fool tonight. I guess I could try it in complete darkness, but I may need to just do the brooder next door trick or wait a couple more days and try again with late hatchers.

Remember my broody turkeys? First the hawk, then my oldest grandson trying to combine two nests which resulted in two turkeys moving the whole thing and trying to share a nest outside? THAT resulted in my daughter moving the nest to a nest box and I just locked her in overnight hoping for the best. Tonight my youngest grandson (raised in California) gathered the eggs. Go ahead, you can say OH NO! My wife started take care of the eggs and then asked why there were so many turkey eggs. Then she said several of these are rocking! They were already cooling off but they wanted to try and save them. I didn't even have an incubator warmed up because I've been to busy to start hatching but we plugged in one that I built which has an electronic thermostat and heats up fast. I've never won the lottery, but if any survive they'll have beaten those odds.
4 won the lottery in the incubator. There was another hatched but had a wry neck and couldn't get off its back. Now I have 3 broody hen sitting. There were enough feathers in the pen that I thought a critter had killed one turkey. I figured out the gobblers had been fighting so it's time for the hangin' tree and on to freezer camp.
