***OKIES in the BYC III ***

You got me curious so I went back on my messages. I have one PM from you 5-24 the whole time I been on here, no emails. Maybe they have my contact info wrong, or maybe I am on their "list"

Congrats on our new Okie winners.

I have been working on a new garden experiment here are a few pics w/ explanations.

Here are all the supplies (well almost all) Now who wouldn't look at that and think veggie garden?

Here it is all put together. I added chicken poop and oyster shells to the water. Oyster shells for the tomatoes, and chicken poop for well, everything.

66877_dsc_0073.jpg

I planted and labeled all kinds of garden plants to see what works (if anything) and what doesn't. Tomato, pepper, squash, lettuce, greens, herbs. Did not include any vines b/c I wasn't set up for that or any roots for obvious reasons.

66877_dsc_0074.jpg

There is dryer lint in the bottom of each cup just to hold the seed until the roots can grow.

Each cup has holes cut in the bottom for the roots to dangle in the water

I will add an air stone to keep it from going anarobic and those anti mosquito biscuits.

This was all in addition to the 60 new feet of tomatoes, and the corner flower bed, which I over planted in carrots, herbs, onion, radish, chard, and greens. (Over planted b/c the flowers were all bulbs and tubers)

Howdy everyone just got home from work and I went and picked up a lost homing pigeon, I have contacted the pigeon union and hope to hear from them soon. Congrats NAVA! Thats an awesome folder Guy you do nice work. Elwood I really think you have broken some sort of record for snake catches in a trap of any sort.

Evening Okies - Too hot for me today. I'm going to wait until the sun goes down before I close the barn. I've had two fans going out there to keep the air moving. If it's this hot again tomorrow, I'm moving all the babies out to temporary pens under the trees.

I'm glad to know ducks can scowl. I thought I was just seeing things. Tonight, when I put the little waddlers away, I'm going to remind them that nasty old owls eat cranky duck babies, so going into their safe duck house is really the best thing to do.

Peaches - I'm glad to hear Doc will be home soon.

Elwood - Keep catching those copperheads. If you get them all, then the rest of us won't have to worry about seeing them this summer.

Howdy everyone, been really busy and haven't had a chance to catch up on the thread. I am getting ready to build some chicken baths and wanted some input. I am thinking o using some round cattle vitamin bins, if you have never seen them before they are a metal tub about 2 1/2 feet wide by 1 foot deep. Is that large enough and what is in your opinion the best poultry dust to use? I think I am having a mite issue in one of my coops. I thought mites would be black but I have a bunch of tiny yellow bugs, and a few black but they are coating my barn posts in the coop. The posts are part of the original structure. I have sprayed in there 3 times with "Poultry protector the Natural Protectant for mites, lice and insect control" It just isn't working, if anything I think it is causing it to get worse!

The first two times I removed all the bedding etc, last night I didn't have time and just sprayed all over because I was frustrated, probably didn't do any good but made me feel better. The new coops, I haven't noticed any issues with mites, but I worry I will track mites in there.

Anyway...got off on a rant there. Ideas for poultry bath?

Hope everyone is doing well, did see as I was scrolling down that Elwood seems to be breeding snakes not chickens.

makes me want to get some of those traps, but hubby would have to go in and check it before I went up there and get rid of snake without telling me. Last time I found a snake in the barn I didn't go back in for weeks. And I saw him kill it!

Greybear...Hubby wants to put in a request for more of the cranberry jalapeno jelly, I swear he went thru it in one sitting and has been raving about it since! Just name an auction your going to and I will use it as an excuse to meet up for some Jelly!

Cayuse- I use a pit that the birds dug for me in their normal dusting activity and I mix poultry/livestock dust and ash from a wood fire (not charcoal) to it they will turn all I dump back in the dirt in a day. It is strange to see mites not on the birds I have never seen mites on posts etc.

I have never seen them on the birds, I am staring at their legs trying to find a bug and can not find them. Even caught one and looked around the hair at start of legs, no bugs seen. But as soon as I walk in the coop and start collecting eggs, my hands are just covered in them. And my broody, Her eggs had a bunch on them

hope it didn't hurt the eggs, but I sprayed over them. I mostly just sprayed the wood yesterday.

So based on what you are saying, filling up the dust bath will be a regular chore huh?

Those little black bugs could be weevils. After harvest the ground will be black with those suckers. And as we found out while working on equipment in the field they bite.

Northern Fowl mites are clear unless they have fed then they are red. They come out at night and do not stay on the birds but hide in cracks in the coop during the day.

Lice are white or yellowish in color and are usually found around the vent and under the wing of a bird.

Feather mites, well you won't see them as they are tiny and leave feathers looking transparent.
