I even get discouraged at times and the wife and I have been raising birds for quite a while. When those times occur Teva is a valuable asset to me because she can see problems through a fresh set of eyes. In fact this year she has been the driving force behind the hatching of eggs and the brooding of chicks because I am just not able to help very much.

When we suffer losses we always take the time to try to assess why and try to correct it in the future. Because of the same reasons you mentioned there are very few free range birds here, most are in secure pens which is more costly in feed but safer for the birds.

Spent most of the day going from soaker hose to soaker hose to sprinkler back to soaker hoses and cutting out deadwood on the crepe myrtles. It was hot...and windy. With the south winds we didn't have to turn on the industrial fan. The pens were cooler than yesterday.
The forecast is hot hot hot for the next 10 days.

Anyone with a garden....are you getting any tomatoes? I'm having to use Bloomset because tomatoes don't set fruit when temps are over 85 degrees. We have beautiful plants that are blooming, but no fruit. We have had one tomato ripen and enjoyed it today for lunch.

It will be weeks before we get any more.

Morning all.

There seems to be some confusion around my house today. Maybe some of you can help decide if it's me or the chickens. First off, I have a barred rock cockerel that has been crowing for a couple of weeks. This morning he decided to sing the hen egg song - all by himself. The hens weren't singing, just him. Secondly, I have a white Polish that's about 2 1/2 months old I swore was a female. I based that on the hairdo - a poofy style rather than the more long and flimsy look that the males get, and until the past couple of days the comb and wattles were nearly non-existent. Now I'm thinking this "pullet" may be a cockerel since he/she started crowing this morning for the first time. I'm posting front and side views of the white bird hoping someone will let me know if this is a confused female or a cockerel. Why is the other cockerel singing the egg song?
