Only you can determine just what stage you are in right now. But if you decide to just coast for a bit remember one thing, there are very good people here on the board that you can bounce ideas off of.
I even get discouraged at times and the wife and I have been raising birds for quite a while. When those times occur Teva is a valuable asset to me because she can see problems through a fresh set of eyes. In fact this year she has been the driving force behind the hatching of eggs and the brooding of chicks because I am just not able to help very much.
When we suffer losses we always take the time to try to assess why and try to correct it in the future. Because of the same reasons you mentioned there are very few free range birds here, most are in secure pens which is more costly in feed but safer for the birds.
