***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Okay, so they aren't very big ears, but they do have ears. I'm not planning to milk their ears, and as far as I can tell (through voracious reading of books about milk goats) there is no correlation between the size of a goat's ears and the amount of milk she produces. I need to think of names. They are La Mancha, so characters from Don Quixote are appropriate. Too bad there aren't many female characters.

At least you can use Dulcinea and Aldonza.

Edited to add: From the book there's "The Duchess" and her maid Altisidora. Teresa Panza, Sanchos' wife. Lucinda is married to Cardenio. Dorthea, who also pretends to be Princess Micomicona. Countess Trifaldi, although she is fictitious and impersonated by the Duke's steward. Antonia is Don Quixote's niece. Maritornes, the servant. Ana Félix, Ricote's daughter. Doña Rodriguez de Grijalba, a duenna in the Duchess' court.

Hey There,

One more day till the brothers get here and then the outside pipe work gets going... Jason got the trench dug ... Thanks to the Ditch Witch and I think he seceretly was having fun with that "TOY" because Wayne (elderly awesome neighbor) came over and between them two and our son.. the trench got done...

The chickens and ducks dont know what to think of the trench as they keep spying at it and wondering if its safe to cross.. HA HA HA

Now its time to get the house cleaned... Yall have a good one

So how are you keeping your chicks cool in this triple digit Oklahoma heat? I have White Leghorns, which by nature are super skiddish, so they don't like me trying to catch them or trying to "bath" them as some can. I have been freezing repurposed milk jugs with water and setting that in a shallow 3 gallon waterer. Obviously, making sure they have plenty of fresh cool water. My chicken tractor has excellent ventilation and we have no shortage of wind. My husband secured a tarp over their chicken tractor so the sun isn't beating directly on them so between the tarp and shade from the trees they aren't directly in the sun. I let them out yesterday in the heat of the day to see if they would find a cooler place in the cane and they quickly came back to their tractor and laid down. Ugh, I feel so bad for them.

Aside from setting up misters, which I am tempted to do, is there anything else I can do help them in this heat? Should I be giving them electrolytes/vitamins? (They're 8 weeks old and for the most part chick starter exclusively)

I set India blue peacock eggs......to keep chickens cool misters are ok I guess...I have lots of shade for them and fans....

Traci - Thanks for the names. It's been ages since I read Don Quixote, and Dulcinea was the only female character I could recall. Dulcinea and Aldonza are actually the same person. Hummm. I really like the names Teresa, Lucinda, and Antonia. I wonder if a goat would become aloof if her name were Countess Trifaldi?

morning folks! have you ever looked at folks beautiful set ups....MJ!!! and then look at yours and want to rip yours down and redo it??? sigh... my banty set up realllly needs revising!

on the heat- i put a fan and ice in front of it, so it keeps the nest area cool- then in the run, the duck enclosure is next to it, so when the ducks splash, it waters down the run and keeps it cooler, the chickens like walking around in the mud- also i have heard getting a plastic trashcan, lay it on its side and put 2 liter bottles of ice in it, the chickens will walk into an 'air conditioned room' when they need to cool down... haven't done misters yet- but last year i got an old hose, punched holes in it and hung it around the run, making our own mister
