It's hot here but it's hot all over so I am no worse off than all of my Okie friends.
It is a lot easier to tend the flock since we got rid of all of Grace's show birds. I only have 14 layers left (oops...forgot about 5 BL chicks that hatched out last month) so we have gone from around two hours to feed and water down to about 15 minutes.
Now if I could just get rid of all the extra pens I could clean the chicken yard up and the girls could really enjoy the space.​

Did I miss something? Why are you getting rid of her show birds?

Grace is 19 now and no longer in the Junior Class.
She doesn't want to compete in the Open class. She said it was not worth the expense. Most of the people that raise birds to show think nothing of spending $$$ on their birds and Grace said that would take the fun out of it for her.
I agree with her thinking.
She had a wonderful 10-12 years showing and raising her birds. She learned many lessons about business, responsibilities and life and made some wonderful lifetime friends. She had an opportunity to work with some top breeders, teach some younger kids what she had learned by leading the 4H poultry club, help the community by taking over as the Poultry Superintendent of the County Fair. All in all her experiences have enriched her life and I am grateful for the time we got to spend working together.

I understand, but I'll miss seeing her and her birds at the shows. And you're right, she is a wonderful kid, and you're a very lucky dad. Tell her I said "hey".

I will. She is at OBU this week for a Worship Arts Camp called "Resonate" She is working with her older sister teaching Sign Language. They will be having a free concert this Saturday at 11am that open to the public. It should be great.
You never know....We may just show up at a show now and then just to see old friends.

I've lost a few squash plants to the bugs, but have been winning the over all war, but it is daily spraying w/ tabbacco tea and squishing babies, and eggs, and drowning adults. I have also planted more squash this week, hubbard and spaghetti (sp)

My corn did less then nothing, not unusual for me, I've never actually harvested an ear of corn, usually don't even try anymore, but decided w/ all the changes this year to give it a try.

I actually have cantaloupe for the first time in years this year! woo hooo.

I'm getting ready to plant some stuff for fall harvest, raab broccoli, chard, greens, snow peas, potatoes etc.... And still hoping for peppers and tomatoes in the fall.

Been freezing the squash, about to start freezing the cukes. ( I don't can, hate canning! I freeze and dehydrate.) Did you know you can freeze your corn in the husk?

Has anyone been to the sale at Chandler? I'm wondering how poultry does in that sale. Looks like birds and yard-sale stuff sells at 3:00 and then goats and sheep at 5:00.

Just got in from filling up all the waterers and spraying down the pens. It seems hotter today than it has been! (They need a hot sweaty smiley to insert here)
