When I was young my Gma had read in Organic Gardens (probably) that if you can catch a grasshopper it is likely sick, so to control and kill them you catch the hoppers and blend them in the blender and then spray / broadcast the hopper juice over the plants and all the hopper who eat it will get whatever illness the original hoppers had, in addition to being disturbing it was a terrifying experience for someone who is TERRIFIED of grasshoppers!!!!!!

I know that this is free enterprise at its best, but it sure is aggravating to be on the buying end of this.

It reminds me of the summer/Fall/Winter of 2005 when we tried a bale of corn stalks for the cows, because hay was next to impossible to find - at any price. We sold the cows in early spring because we couldn't find enough hay and then it rained so much the Spring and Summer of 2006 that we had to brush hog the pasture.

Oh man, say it aint so. I thought I was just a good grasshopper catcher, now I find out I am getting the old weak sick ones.

I catch a few every day and give to my oreintals that are in pens and cant get any for them selves. When I walk up to their pen they meet me and look at me like beggers wanting me to turn the hoppers loose so the games can begin. Cracks me up though. Most of the time, the one that is quick enough to catch the hopper, loses it and another will most of the time eat it. Thats life, work your butt off for something then someone comes in and yanks it away.

old*cowboy :

hey doubleo, do you have any goats other than the fainting ones

Oh by no means do you have to ever refer to me as doubleostud. I have had the same email address since I was 13. Now its just easy to remember for me. Nope all I raise now is fainters. I've raised about them all though from meat to dairy to whatever you want to consider pygmy.

Thanks Carla. I am going to get the needed ingredients and set some grasshopper bait. Figure I will start in the orchard, that I planted this yr. The birds don't go on the far side of my property so it is a good place to test it out. I was just searching last night for some ways to eliminate the hoppers! I figure if I don't get them knocked down to something manageable I will never have a successful garden out here.
