***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I'm missing our does. They are at the breeder, so they won't be greeting me in the morning for a week or so. The boar buck that injured his man parts is now healed, so he's going to be the daddy after all. He's very handsome. I'm sure the kids will be wonderful.

I was happy to see that the breeder is also fond of chickens. She had at least a dozen hens and a few roosters free-ranging when I arrived at her place. She told me she's not sure how she ended up with so many chickens. Does anyone ever know? I think some folks are genetically predisposed to have chickens. The number isn't important.

Thanks Wayne, he would be considered a Reza asil, or one that will mature out at 6.6lbs or less. I am pretty pleased with this pair. I have cut down to my very best crucial must keep birds for next years breeders. I have eliminated almost 40% of my birds, to allow myself to do a better job with the ones I kept. I am down to three pairs of Brazilian, one pair of asil, and eight or nine spangled oegb. I do have half a dozen oddball birds running around strictly for my amusement. I am probably going to get a dozen or so guineas for next year. Good watch dogs and bug eaters.

Has any one had any contact with Donny? He had so many birds and projects going I njust wonder if he is still keeping up with them.Hope he gets time to come back and join us again.

Atwoods carries the stock tank heaters for metal tanks not for plastic for $36 bucks.. They do not carry the wire float holder. I ordered two Farm Inovator Ice chasers - stock tank floating heaters from Antonline.com thru Amazon.com. They are designed for plastic/rubber tanks and don't require the wire float cage. I think they were 29.95...cheaper than atwoods and there was free shipping. Farm Inovators also makes a water tight cord lock cord connector for $5.89.

Cool thank you for the information on the tank heaters. I am looking for one with a float but thought if I have to I can make a float. A plastic bottle tethered to the heater will work. Reading the almanac and long term weather reports, they say this is going to be a dry but bitterly cold weather. I want to be better prepared. Have insulated coveralls, boots, lots of thick socks, hats scarves, gloves and now I will not have to worry about watering the chickens. Bring it on Winter!!!

Well I got my meals for the next week done. Made a sausage, mushroom, sundried-tomato quich, vegetarian beefy noodles and baked purple potatoes with onion, lipton onion soup and olive oil. Yummy!! I so like preparing all my meals for the week, it saves money clean-up and time during the week, plus I eat less and better. My typical bachlorette meal is german bread with cream cheese and avocado. Of course for dinner tonight I had two steamed artichokes with lemon butter sauce. That is my all time favorite dinner.

Think it is time to start getting ready for bed. One more full week until Thanksgiving week. The kids have been wild the last couple of weeks and it will probably not get any better before Winter Break. augh!!!

Hope everyone has a good night!

Our girls are 1 wk old today!

Hi all, made it back from OKC. Spent the weekend set up at Marys Fleamarket. Seen some Bycers, sold some stuff and and sold some chickens. Bought a few items. Had a good time for the most part. Got to spend some time with grandkids. Sure good to be back home though. Made some room in my pens so I can expand in some of the breeds I want to work harder in.

I bought a Whirlpool from our Lowes 6 years ago and I have replaced it every year since then. I actually replaced one in just six days. So far either Whirlpool or Lowes has paid for the part but I have had to replace it (which is not to hard but time consuming) not to mention you are without hot water for a spell.
The one I have in now has made it just over a year. They stopped using the burner assembly they were using and went to a new design so you might be ok replacing it once if the tank is not too old. Anything over 6 years and I would replace it (but not with another Whirlpool).

My water heater crapped out this summer and I considered buying a new one but the cheapest I could find was about $300. The tankless heaters are great but cost over $500. I bought a rebuild kit that cost about $36 and the hex socket to remove the elements that was about $7. I also had to replace the copper water intact that was $16 and installed a shut off valve with pipe dope and everything $10. All said I spent less then $70. Water heater works great, I did not have to pull it out to dispose of it. Plus it was quite a feeling of accomplishment to do something like that all by myself.
As long as the tank does not have a leak they can be rebuilt. Fortunately mine was only 5 years old and yes it is a Whirlpool.

Jcatblum, their so cute lol!!! I remember so well bottle-feeding lambs and goat babies.
Old Cowboy, I should've ran out to Mary's to see you! I can't trust myself around that many birds though. I don't think I could've left bird-less with you and Michael both there.

Thanks for the hot water heater info everyone! Sounds like whirlpool sucks to me, but I'm no expert.

If this had happened a couple of months ago, I'd probably have opted to go buy a whole new tank, now Christmas is looming large and I'd rather wait. I suppose if I can get the replacement parts from whirlpool at their cost, I'll go that route for now and hope it limps through until next year. My folks had a tankless years and years ago and it didn't last long. When it crapped out, the went back to a tank. I LOVE the idea of tankless, and think I'll look into it for my next one. Has anyone tried one? Know any good brands? Wish I had a little one for the sink, at least I could fill the bathtub with some hot water and do my dishes!
