Let's see now, you want guinea pigs, a puppy and warmer weather without the snow. Did I remember everything?

City - Looks like I missed chatting with you last night. Are your hens ready for winter? I've got one who molted late, so I'm hoping she will exercise good judgment and not stay outside too long with her BGFs when we have snow on the ground.

Teach - Your wish for a puppy sent me on a quest to find Conner's baby (puppy) photos. DH informed me they are on the hard drive of my old computer, so I'm going to have to find the BLACX drive thingy (I'm so awful with computer hardware... I know the hard drive sits in the carriage of the blacx thing, like a sideways 8-track

) so I can download the photos to my current computer. Here are a few photos I found online. You need a puppy. That's what you tell your wife. You need a puppy. It worked for me . . . once

Do you have a direct line to Santa?

Any successful enabler must have resources from which to acquire "gifts" for others

Craigslist is full of "free puppies" and I acquired a "guinea pig" one time from a woman whose brother offered her a "guinea" and then brought her a mammal instead of a bird.
The weather is of course above my capabilities, but a "guinea" and "puppy" would be within my generous nature and ability

Poco - the pictures of the puppies are wonderful - totally an "awe" experience

Looks like I logged off too early last night! Love the puppy photos - I've been looking at all of the puppies available for adoption online and in the paper, but I have decided now that Titus is 10 years old not to get another dog - I want Titus to continue to enjoy his "only dog" status in his later years. Of course, I still look just to keep in practice!

Today looks like it will be another day of moderate weather - with some sun even! That is the best. I opened the run door this morning and the ladies all came to greet me. I threw them a couple of cups of cat food and they were quite pleased. I still think it's funny that they leave the food they are eating to run to each new handful of food that hits the ground. Chickens are good for an early morning smile!

Poco - I still have a couple of molters in the group, but every-cluck is doing well. Thank you for asking! I love all the colors in my flock. I am looking forward to seeing Connor's baby photos if/when you find them...

What I originally wanted before I got any of my chickens was a Blue Silkie GIRL. Would you believe I still don't have that color of a girl?

I really do enjoy bathing and blow drying chickens. Therapeutic.

Speaking of molting...NNN is going thru a big molt. I'm having to collect bunches of feathers out of the stock tank every morning. She is inside under a lamp. And that leads to my question.

Anyone ever brood a hen and chicks inside....would it be a good idea to turn off that lamp in the evening and give them some hours of darkness now that the chicks are beginning to feather? They hatched about Dec 1.
I've always kept the light on when I have chicks for the warmth...just haven't ever brought a hen in with them.
If the chicks need light to find food and water thru the night, I can turn on the little bathroom light.
That room will not get cold because it has a little room heater. It's a very comfortable temperature.

The temp in the hen house was a good 40 degrees today. And with the sun shining the girls wanted out to free range. Mad dash out the gate.

Need more coffee and then will go hook up one more red heat lamp in the hen house. Won't plug it in yet...it's just in case the other one goes out. When it's cold...easier to unplug one instead of getting out the ladder to change the bulb. At my age, I don't need to be on a ladder.

Really need to do some gift sewing today too. We won't do Christmas until the 27th..getting all three girls and their families together gets harder each year with all the extended families....
