***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I know this sounds strange, but my wife has a Serama hen that she absolutely loves. For a week she has been off.... first I thought egg bound since there was a hardish something in her sac, but is been to long to be egg bound, and is bigger now. I realized this morning that she hasn't pooped in three days, at least. Any ideas other than cull? The wife will be broken hearted if she dies, help? Constipated, any ideas?

Nate,
It has been my experience with hatchery EEs that they don't usually lay a light blue egg - but instead are more likely to lay a green or pink egg. Also, they tend to have their own variety of lacing, instead of being a true Americauna recognized solid color. Unfortunately, I have to wait 5-6 months until they are laying to find this out. Do you know if there are any NPIP testers close to you? If so, it might be easiest to get birds that are already laying and have them NPIP tested, so you can see the color of the egg before committing a lot of time and feed to them.

They have to come from an NPIP source. Its just a regulation. I'm not going to order the Ameraucanas from a hatchery. I just need a the silver laced and the gold laced if I can't find them.

Can u give a chicken an enema? If not I would probably pull her off feed and try to get her to drink some corn oil and water see if u can give her loose stools?

I've got 5 "Eggers", only 1 is laying though and her eggs are flippin' huge & green. I'd sure like some blue eggs, too. I can't seem to easily find actual Ameracauna. I don't want to ship eggs in and raise them & don't want to ship a single bird in for $100 and hope the breeder didn't lie. I wish there was a Chicken Store we could go pick out any breed we wanted as adults.

Rexbandit, that's a lot of quail! And geese, too. You got some OEGB!? Is that rooster color called duckwing? I've got 2 little pullets the same color as your 2 (that's silver duckwing also , right?) These are the coolest little birds, do yours talk all the time, too? I just might have to have a Blue Wheaton boy like I saw at Carl's yesterday. He sat right in the middle of my hand and stared at me like I was the most fascinating thing he'd ever seen. Awesome little guy. Carl set him down and he skittered right back into his pen by himself.
Carl, if EVER you get to a point that you're not going to use him for breeding, name your price I'll pay it. I'm in love with that tiny boy.

Doesn't sound strange to me at all

I bet it doesn't to Robin either. I haven't had experience with a hen being eggbound but from what I've read, I wouldn't rule that out yet after just 3 days. I'd definitely soak her in a nice warm bath and get her relaxed and see if you can feel anything up there. Your wife's fingers might work better than yours. If you can't feel anything at least you can rule out eggbound. Hopefully some others have better ideas.
Edit: There's also something called internal laying you might want to look up. The prognosis sucks but given her symptoms and the swelling that might be what it is.

she isn't egg bound, we have had her on the house for three days, she has been like this for over a week, i just know she hadn't passed stool in three days.

NPIP is National Poultry Improvement Plan. Google is and it is a through the Oklahoma Dept of Agriculture. They test for Pullorum typhoid and Bird flu. It is very inexpensive to be in here in Oklahoma. About $5 a year. Some states its $1000's
