***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well, thought I would join this thread, I am near the OK bourder, north of it about 10 miles. I mainly raise black rosecombs, but also have some OE's, and ameraucana's, and some others, they are mainly just something to mess with, really not into them much. Love my rosecombs. Plan to make the Pryor show. Never entered one so this may be a mess for me for sure! Just want to get my birds out in the public eye. Never know until you try. May tar and feather my birds and send me back to Kansas! I lived in the OK panhandle for thirteen years, so I have been a okie!

Hope everyone has a great hump day~

I am looking at the projected high of 50 degrees and thinking - at least some of the water will thaw later today.
This is definately a morning to get the car warmed up before leaving - so the heater has a chance to get the interior temp raised a few degrees.
Brrrrrr

Havent had time to post much glad to see this weather warming back up . Bot some dum bird's at the sale they will not get on the rooster they just sat on the grouwnd an last night i went out to check on thim only 1 stayd on the roost they wont last long seting on the cold grown

Morning. I'm back in for a second cup of coffee to help me thaw. The outside thermometer shows 28 F., but it feels more like 18.

Sooner - Do you have your hives finished? I'm not a carpenter either, but I'm really looking forward to making my hives. My goat milking stand actually turned out okay, so I figure I can put hives together if I study plans to make them.

I'm scheduled to candle my first batch of eggs for the season. They'll be crosses, mostly, but at least it will give me some idea of how my roosters are doing. Ten more days and my birds ought to be producing pure breeds again. Next year I'll make sure I get my groups together sooner.

Several of my birds like to roost on the ground. I just make sure they have plenty of straw to help keep them warm - and mine are within a chain link fence pen to discourage predators. I do however worry about haystacking for those on the ground - particularly when it is this cold. I don't want the bottom ones to suffocate.

Michael the dark RIR roo I bought in Newcastle is missing half it's wing & can't roost. Dh put a roost that was about 6 inches off the ground & he can't get on the low roost either! So I hung a heat light for him.

Had some other grown birds I bought that didn't like to roost-- we would go down every night & put them on the roost. Out of 10 birds only 1 would ever stay on the roost.

No mater what kind of roost we provide chickens will still do what they like. That is why I have a crazy EE that sneaks in the barn builds a nest to lay her eggs in & roost in the rafters. Guess she just prefers to do her own thing

To make sure I always have thawed water @ the barn I took a rain barrel & dropped fish tank heater in it. Already had the 55 gal drum that I used as a rain barrel & already had the heater, I am guessing new the heater cost the same as a stock tank heater, but people are always getting rid of fish stuff at yard sales. I will make sure I look for old tank heaters.
