***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Here's 2 pictures of others set ups, I like the 1st one instead of a heating pad. You could use red bulbs and metal screen. The screen I used was fiberglass.
In the 2nd picture they used the top drawers for the males and unsexed babies and the 3rd drawer for breeding and bottom drawer for supplies. Not sure how you'd heat it all to 90 degrees though. I guess maybe you'd only need to heat the breeding drawer that high with a heating pad. I like this one, too.

I like your box setup better than these, I think I would have hissers in the same tank I had them in before, it was a 30 gal aquarium with a screen lid the Dubia I would set up like your tub, I was looking at heat pads and all of them have a 2 hour auto shut off, How would you get around that?

is the shut off like a thermostat, or like a overload?

Thanks for the info and the picture. I heard Kass (I think it was her) say she was thinking of useing a expired freezer. I too have a large chest type freezer that does not work (gosh, I mean what good redneck dont have one or two of these out back) Which of the 2 breeds require the least amount of warmth? I think if I get into this and use the freezer I will build a false bottom about the hidth of where the ledge is that covers the moter area. If not, leaning in to fetch bugs and clean may be more than back can handle.

I have a couple of old chest type freezers and I think the difficulty of cleaning the thing to the bottom would be tough esp with back problems I tried raising worms in them and they drowned as they take on more water than I would have ever though they could

My dad always put the eggs in a egg carton under their big dresser until he was ready to set them in the incubator.
My parents dresser is the type with space under it. So easy to get to the eggs and store them. :)

We used to keep all the eggs in cartons between the stove and freezer I know some had to be a month old when we loaded the incubator the old house was always cool in winter but the place they were was a warm spot, I've tried that since then and get a poor hatch rate out of any that are older than a week or more I don't know what might be different from then and now other than it was just the old folks magic LOL

It's some sort of built in timer I'll probably just open it and bypass the timer part so it just stays on all the time on med heat, it has 3 settings but the timer works for the whole unit

you girls and your COOTIES!

Cowboy is that where you purchased that incubator last yr?

Hello Okies from Colorado. I wanted to find out if anyone has ordered an incubator from one of your locals. Place is called customincubators.com? Real nice kid answered all my questions and they are reasonable priced and just wanted to see if anyone out there has gotten a bator from them and if the quality was good. Thanks

Well I aint from Colo. but yep I bought one of them incubators from them fellows from Marlow Okla. This is my experiance and aint saying it is always this way, but sure was with mine. First thing they did was send me a differant style than I ordered. I called them and they told me sure they would make that right, all I had to do was pay shipping both ways. So I told them forget, I would use this one. Set first batch of eggs as per instructions. I would go in and look at it from time to time and it would fluctuate as much as 4 degrees. I called them and told them and they anwsered "no one else has complained". After trying several sets of eggs and throwing 95 percent of the eggs out I called them again and told them I was very unhappy and when I ordered it they said they would stand behind it. They told me they had no other complaints but again if I would pay shipping both ways they would check it out (not replace with the one I ordered). After about my 4th call they stopped talking to me. I guess what I am trying to say is that if Marlow wasnt so far away, I would have drove by and throwed it out in their yard and said good ridance. But again, thats just me and I dont hold no grudge.

there used to be a person im miami okla. that built bators using all sportsman parts. not as pretty, but cost less than a sportsman and worked just as good. i am using 1 right now, cost me 25 bucks at the swap meet a couple of years ago.

I ordered this one for $18:

But that was after I'd finally found one 1/2 that size at CVS Pharmacy (with no auto shutoff) for the same price. Walmart and Walgreens both only had the auto-shut off timer. I'm going to keep both of them, never hurts to have a spare and it'd cost more in gas to return it than it'd be worth.
I'd have liked to use an aquarium, I've got so many here. But a screened lid would've cost more than the $6 each for these 3 tubs. And in an aquarium you can watch them, and they're really pretty cool. I set 2 slices of orange in there and they headed for it immediately. Didn't bother then a bit that some giant old woman was peering down at them from above lol

It is a regular brower metal brooder roughly 2ft wide, 3 ft deep and about 14 inches tall. It has new heating element, wafer and switch all in very good working order just cutting back to 6 brooders instead of 7. I have the front and side mount waterers and feeders for the brooder as well.

Is this brooder like the ones in your brood house? Those are really nice! I liked the way the half lid opens up so you can service the needs of the chicks. In fact your whole set up is pretty neat!

There is a Newcastle sale this week right? Think I will try to make it, because DH has duty. Chicken auction is better than spending the night home alone. Anybody else plan on making it?

Tonight I went down & put leg bands on some birds after they were roosting. Picked out 24 roosters that will be going to the freezer in the next 4-6 wks, maybe sooner if they fill in quickly. Asked DH how he felt about Capons, and he didn't object so maybe some of these Marans I am hatching will be capons????
