***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Here's 2 pictures of others set ups, I like the 1st one instead of a heating pad. You could use red bulbs and metal screen. The screen I used was fiberglass.
In the 2nd picture they used the top drawers for the males and unsexed babies and the 3rd drawer for breeding and bottom drawer for supplies. Not sure how you'd heat it all to 90 degrees though. I guess maybe you'd only need to heat the breeding drawer that high with a heating pad. I like this one, too.

I like your box setup better than these, I think I would have hissers in the same tank I had them in before, it was a 30 gal aquarium with a screen lid the Dubia I would set up like your tub, I was looking at heat pads and all of them have a 2 hour auto shut off, How would you get around that?

How will your fiberglass screen hold up to a light being set on top?
Why not use a gardener's mat - the kind they use under trays to start seedlings.

That is entirely possible. Where did you get your brown reds? not all Brown reds are the same and often the ones being shown are actually a cross breed that will not breed true.
Can you send me a pic of that chick as well as the breeders and teh other chicks.
Ok, Here is one picture. Chick is 48 hrs.

Do you think if I put a small light bulb (would experiment with wattage like brooder) it would work to keep them comfortable, or would the constant light bother them. That is assuming that it doest go off when the lid is shut.

Is it really that easy to have those bugs? I had planned to use a fish tank with a screened top, it use to be set up for lizards......

what's in the cups?? Where is the paper towel roll?

I've raised them before and have been raising mealworms for over 20 years they are all really easy to keep and raise,

Not that you might want to but, I have used the darkling beetles and mealworms for Skeletal Reclamation they will eat almost anything and that's kinda an answer for Guy also table scraps are okay, just need to only leave them in a day or so, Mold, Grease, and excess moisture would be the only thing to watch out for.

But that was after I'd finally found one 1/2 that size at CVS Pharmacy (with no auto shutoff) for the same price. Walmart and Walgreens both only had the auto-shut off timer. I'm going to keep both of them, never hurts to have a spare and it'd cost more in gas to return it than it'd be worth.
I'd have liked to use an aquarium, I've got so many here. But a screened lid would've cost more than the $6 each for these 3 tubs. And in an aquarium you can watch them, and they're really pretty cool. I set 2 slices of orange in there and they headed for it immediately. Didn't bother then a bit that some giant old woman was peering down at them from above lol

I got one from Walmart and figured that I would just bypass the timer and then install a thermostat to keep it from overheating. Then thought why didn't I just use one of the cookie tin heaters I had already made LOL

i have heard to stay away from them, lack of refunds and replacements....
Hello Okies from Colorado. I wanted to find out if anyone has ordered an incubator from one of your locals. Place is called customincubators.com? Real nice kid answered all my questions and they are reasonable priced and just wanted to see if anyone out there has gotten a bator from them and if the quality was good. Thanks

looks like my one serama hen is still thinking of being broody, she will sit for a bit and then off for a few hours- so i guess i need to wait??

all this talk of bugs.... my dad raised us to not fear them- but the most i've raised is mealies, very easy to raise, don't think i'll try those others you guys are talking about

so far my broody ee has hatched one, will upload pics in a bit- she still has 2 possible, but at varying stages....

I use a 25 watt red light for mine. I haven't used a heat pad since the first month. All the bug sites say to use the mat, but I wasn't happy w/ it. The red light works great for me. I wouldn't do the white light though they are pretty photophobic. If not the red light then the ceramic heater in the shape of a light bulb. But the red light makes working in the colony easier too (harvesting and taking care of it)

thats what i thought, just was wondering!
