***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi! I had to leave for a few minutes to make pancakes. We had brunch rather than breakfast today. We may have lunch, too, but if it's too late we'll just call it linner.

I put this on the planning thread for NEOCS, but not many people have commented, so I'm going to post the T-Shirt design here for some feedback. I want the design to be reminiscent of the old Woodstock T-shirts, so look at the red background (Woodstock) design and then let me know if the black background (Chicken Stock) makes sense. Peace signs? No peace signs? What looks best?

I like the 3rd one alot - love the black.
I also love the Oklahoma/Guitar neck.
Could you put in egg-shaped peace signs?
Really they are all great!

"Chicken Moat" question:
Last week I had the opportunity to meet Ke_ben's sister (our Nevada Okie) and her husband had some questions about the width of a chicken moat. I had not previously understood that the purpose of a moat was to have a run of a width that hawks - with their long wing spans - could not swoop down to get the chickens. My question : what width of a chicken run would prevent a hawk from flying down to snatch a chicken?

I haven't heard much about this but I have had hawks land on my pens ( which are covered with wire) and look down at the chickens. So , in my way of thinking, the "moat" wouldn't stop a hawk from lighting and then jumping down in the pen to kill a chicken. A narrow enough pen might deter them from swooping down and snatching one away.
I have also seen flying hawks chase chickens through trees and brush and they were very adept at maneuvering their way through the brush.
I know I haven't answered your question so my best guess would be about three feet wide for the moat.
In by opinion, (not worth a lot) while a "moat my deter some hawks, I don't think a moat would deter most of them.

Playing hookie today - supposed to go to a bunch of Professional development meetings. But my arthritis is really bothering me head to toe this past week.

All right you LF Cochin breeders - I can't stand it any more -
Nanakat, OKracefan, Muesky: My LF, Peaches, needs her own full time boyfriend. She despises the little boys here.
(Rebbecca is going to let me borrow a Cochin and/or Americauna for the Americochin project)

Whenever any of you have a spare Blue or Lemon Blue cockerel - He has got a home here with the most beautiful Buff.

I had not heard of a chicken moat in reference to protection from hawk attack, so I googled it and came up w/ nothing. The only reference I have heard about a chicken moat is for the chickens to provide a gauntlet for insects and weeds to get into the garden. So chickens can provide the most protection for the garden w/o actually being in the garden.

Tried to tell DH he should make me some chicken mobile chicken runs to go between my garden rows & he did not give me a happy look. My garden plan is to put deer fencing around the garden & run some string across the top of the t-post. I will hang empty milk jugs on the string so the wind will blow them & hope animals will be deterred. If we have grasshoppers as thick as last yr I am pretty sure I will be forced to spray something & use grasshopper bait. I am wanting to make mesh caps to protected the direct seeded plants as they are developing. A new sprouted corn, squash or okra would be a few nibbles from the hoppers & then gone!

When we lived in town our chicken run had hardware cloth on top of it & it worked well (it was 3ft wide). Now I use aviary netting on my peafowl, guineas & chicken runs. The netting was pricey but hope it last many years. For smaller areas a lady on eBay sales used fish nets. Or cheap deer fencing could work-- not sure how long it would last.

Michael we played with the incubator some. Got the temp to go up, but the thermostat won't shut off. Keeps running & gets too hot. DH plans on replacing the thermostat tonight while he watches a movie w the girls.

I'll loan you a blue naked neck rooster if Peaches is wanting to live on the wild side!

She'll be ruined for the nice boys lol! Once you go nekkid you never go back haha!
Michael, I sure do miss hearing from you here and that sure is one pretty daughter you've got. You'll be old before your time when your youngest girl grows up a bit. Macy's SOOO pretty and such a great kid judging from the stories you tell.
P&B, I'm not sure what beets taste like? I know I wanted the vinegar for the salt taste but both together just might have an interesting taste.
And yes-chickens love bermuda, so do I. I wish I could get it started here again, the seeds are so expensive. The miniature horse, donkey and sheep I had the past few yrs killed every bit of it. I've only got the 1 sheep left but still no grass.
Poco, love the chick in your avatar lol! You've just got to keep him, he can be the Okie BYC Mascot. The t-shirt design is awesome, you're so good at that stuff. I love it love it! I like the peace signs because my husband always calls them chicken tracks, but I'm thinking they distract from the rest of the shirt. That is one cool design. I can't wear black because I have too many dogs though, so I like the red background better. I've always been envious of people who can wear black.

Egg shaped peace signs is a GREAT idea! I liked the peace signs, but even with the Woodstock theme they seemed a little out of place. Egg shaped peace signs would tie it all together perfectly.
