***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Which varieties are less sucptable to the bugs? I've grown the snake gourds and got a good crop. 5 years ago I grew the birdhouse variety and got more than 50 good sized gourds. Maybe I'll stick with those. This past year I tried the hen's egg variety and all was going very well, covering alot of the pen walls, then the bugs came and everything died fast.

Not sure about gourds I ususally don't grow them, going to try luffa this year though that will be my first gourd in years to grow. I'll have to look up the varieties of squash that are supose to be more resistant, but I don't know if they really are or not.

Squash bugs are evil!!!!! I was able to save my squash last year by constant squishing of eggs, nymphs, and adults. Preditory spiders eat the nymphs, some sprays can kill them (but will get the good bugs too) I tried several organic sprays w/o much success from the sprays. This year I'm going to plant some varieties that they are supose to like less, and try companion planting w/ nastursiums, pansy, and rat tail radish.

Have you ever tried lemon dawn and coke? It works for most garden pests..

Okay just a couple more then I promise I'm finished.

Chitto - Creek meaning brave

Hok'ee - Navajo meaning abandoned

Wapi - Native American meaning lucky

Nikon - Potowatomi meaning my friend.

I tried the tobacco tea last year, didn't phase them at all. Soapy water did more, but you have to be very careful w/ it it will burn the leaves.
