***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Nana - The barn expansion looks great. You'll have lots of space and your birds will be happy with their living quarters.

Thanks, everyone, for posting information about the sales you've attended. It's helpful to hear about selection, prices, and business practices. I would drive a couple of hours to attend a well-run auction with good consignments. I just don't have the stamina anymore to stay up past 11:00 p.m. and still feel productive the next morning.

Good Morning Okie's~

Nana the barn looks good. You will be filling it with chicks soon! Kass, I bet you have some of the best stories! Guys/Boys/Men are always in more trouble because they short circut so often.

I am really sore this morning but moving around. I think I will make it.

metzford when is the vinita sale? Every two weeks or monthly?

Went to the Newcastle auction. But I was lost and felt out of place so we left pretty quick. They had a gorgeous pair of Buff Op's I wanted and the Silkies. Oh my gosh!! But I didn't have a clue what to even do. lol But if anyone noticed, I was the one with the bright orange red hair. I know I stuck out like a sore thumb lol

We won't be at the next one but the one after holler and we will plan on finding each other there. I am slowly learning everyone from here. Once you get into it, it can be dangerous. Of course I can blame my husband because he enables me to buy what I do, lol.

Ask Teach about the time he gave Al the opportunity to bid on his behalf at the Blanchard auction - when Teach wasn't there.

Trying to catch up, but I swear it just crawls and I've got like 100pages to go.

Do you think there would be any interest at POOPs in a nipple/bucket waterer? We made a 3 gallon one for the kids' 4H auction and almost had no takers. But I like to think they just didn't understand what it was.

Have to work on my needs/wants list and get a better idea on numbers. I think I've got someone who can come with, but we'll need to figure out some kid situations.

I bet someone would be interested in the nipple bucket...several have little goats or a calf. Those buckets are really nice to have on hand.

Bring the children with you...there will be things that interest them.

Buster-- I talked to Ronnie for a while. He doesn't want to sell eggs at the farmers market anymore. Since they are forcing everyone to get a sales tax number he said he was out!

I chatted with him a bit, as well. When you consider the $50 a year egg license, the membership has gone up $30 a year, and they now charge $5 a week for a stall, it really cuts into your margins when all you are selling is eggs. You have to sell quite a few dozen just to pay for all of that, especially when you consider all of the other costs for egg production. Granted, we have to get the sales tax number ($35) and the license anyway, but still, it is tough when you add stuff on top of that. He likely has all the customers he needs, anyway. He was actually doing them a favor by participating. He said they are talking about trying to raise the "minimum" price per dozen to $5. I don't see that working, not in Lawton. Add on top of that all the rules, I can see how that can chase somebody off.

I'm going to start out selling eggs there just to have something to draw people to the table. I don't have enough hens yet to compete with the big guys. My focus is going to be my pastured meat birds and turkeys. I mainly want to give people humane alternatives to factory farmed meat, rather than make a lot of money, necessarily. So for me, this is a cause, not a way to make a living. I have a good regular job for that.

Although in a few years, when things get cranking and I'm ready to retire, it might be fun to make a dollar or two doing something I love. :)

Going out this morning to screen in the floor pen and move the Columbian Wyandotte roo and girls inside. Their pen becomes a muddy mess when it rains. I think they will be happier in a dry area for the next few days.

Hope everyone has a lovely Sunday.

I know I should keep my mouth shut, but...

The Lawton TSC is selling Cuckoo Marans chicks, all pullets, for $2.50. Granted, these are hatchery birds, but if all you care about is those chocolate dark eggs (like me), it is a great price nonetheless. The hatchery itself (Privett in NM) sells CM pullets for $3.00 plus shipping. These people didn't even know what they were, a blessing and a curse for a customer like me.

You have until tomorrow morning before I buy them out. :)

Yeah, I miss those guys on here. And the old crowd in general. Fun times. It was nice seeing Al yesterday, however briefly.

Good to see you, PnB.
