***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I don't do turkeys, heck I even got rid of all the big birds and am down to nothing but Bantams. I have no intentions of getting any big birds back on the place and still plan to reduce the Bantam count some more as well.
So if anyone is interested in a good breeder pen of female line Blue wheaton, or a very well proven breeder pen of Brassy Back let me know.

Kassaundra, here are some pics of the greenhouse / woodshed, made mostly out of salvaged materials. Please forgive my photos, they can not even come close to the ones I have seen you post, yours are beautiful. Please ignore the medical products, I have not gotten them cleaned and put away yet, spent too much time playing in the dirt this weekend.

Cool, mine is going to be made of salvaged materials too. Which direction are your windows facing?

I have all teh Columbain's I need for the year and pens all set. I appreciate the information though. That is one variety of OE that really needs some attention and between myself and friend in lousiana we have been making some real strides in the past two years.

I've been reading some of that thread to learn how to improve my Light Brahmas. I have better than I started with but I still want them to be better.

Well with a lot of help (120 from Guy) I set 5 full trays in the incubator this morning. Nothing like putting 900 eggs + or - very few in the incubator at once... I was almost tired from doing that. With 3 other trays in use that move to teh hatcher soon some later today I will start needing teh incubator space to set the eggs for teh next three weeks. That hatch is going to kick my tail but I need these out and going in early april to be ready for fall.

Wow. Now that sounds cool! Do you have a single bator that is that big, or are you doubling up?

Carl, I've been thinking about that comment you made about nobody who is serious about showing sells "show quality" hatching eggs, and it makes sense, even to somebody who doesn't show. Why would I give a leg up to my competition? In my boxing days, that would be like me saying when I throw my jab, it leaves me wide open to a left hook because I had a habit of dropping my right. Plenty of fighters figured that out on their own, so why help them out?

I got hit with enough of them until I finally stopped that painful habit, though.

I would guess somebody is selling eggs from their less-than-best, and keeping the best for themselves. Makes sense to me, anyway.

Now see, I'm the exact opposite. I raise only turkeys and LF, and don't even see the point of Bantams.

Room for all of us in this thread, isn't there? Differences make life interesting. It's what makes the world go round.

Good morning everyone. Just got in from checking on my goats. Got one expecting.

While I was watching them all eat I got to looking at the area by their pens. It's covered and has support beams up. And it's just a big unused space. Got two walls (its the back of the barn) and all I would need to do it put up some more tin about half way and the rest chicken wire and throw down straw and some places to roost and some nesting boxes and man. I could buy some chickens....actual chickens! Since you know according to chicken math I don' actually own any chickens since mine don't lay eggs yet. But then we would have three coops!

This is bad. What have I gotten myself into??

Ohmagosh you sound like me! We are always building, at least when the Army lets me have my hubby. I have a LaMancha that is due shortly. We just built her a kidding barn. Now we are eyeballing the current hen house, as it would make a perfect little milking barn. Of course this means that we'd need a new hen house...with an area just for the guineas, oh and some storage as well because the barn is overflowing. Gosh but we need a new loafing shed .....
That is what you have gotten yourself into

i would demand a guarantee on the show quality stuff, i dont know anyone, and i know a LOT of show people, that wouldnt be happy with 3-5% of their yearly hatch being show quality!

when i showed, i would hatch in the hundreds for a few birds to show. and i dang sure wasnt selling eggs to anyone!

I set the first batch of turkey eggs from my hen last sunday. The only other time I tried to incubate turkey eggs was from eggs I bought off of Ebay, only had one hatch out of 6, then it promptly died, so that was an expensive learning expreience. I only have two turkey hens, so I am not able to get a large batch all going at the same time, only thing I can think of is to stagger the hatches and use the othe incubator for lock down.
Any other ideas would be appreciated about incubating and brooding turkey poults.

No rain here yet, has been cloudy and stormy looking off and on all weekend, my bones are telling me its going to rain a lot though !
We are trying to hatch turkey eggs for the first time setting some at the end of this wk. I keep trying to set my peahens eggs & haven't had much luck with them yet.
My peahen never makes a sound, but I do hear my peacock call out frequently now that it is breeding season. We enjoy the peafowl, but are seriously considering selling the pair. DH wants their pen to be used for guineas.
Still haven't found a single guinea egg! I need to have a serious talk with those birds!
Today working hard to get things done before it rains. Think we are suppose to get close to 2 inches here. Seen other places they are calling for much more. Glad I haven't put any important stuff in the garden. Would hate for it to wash away.

NanaKat,
I moved 5 LF eggs to the hatcher, the two OE did not make it they stopped somewhere around day 14

Mitzi,
I moved 8 Blue eggs, and 9 Dark Brahma.

Okieridge,
I moved 16 eggs to the hatcher.

I did hatch out some guines last year from some eggs I was give, they sure are skittish compared to chickens, and loud, took them to the sale and did fairly well with what I got from them. The tom turkey we have is about as loud as a guine, he gobbles at everything that moves, nothings going to sneak up on him or his girls.
