after loosing Flo last nite, i was worried about toots- her chick, well toots seems to be adjusting after i let her see flo, i have heard that they need to see their companions that have died- in her case it seems to have helped- she is now... chasing the chihuahua around the house... and checking out the young chicks, and sits in my lap while i am working- i need to get her a diaper, i see a house chicken in the making.... i have gotten so i really don't like having them in the house for long- but she is different - first nite without her mama, she is sleeping in the tub with a stuffed duck and teddy- she promptly burrowed under them...

how do you vaccinate an egg??? and what disease would you vaccinate for??

Hang on Robin. I will post a link that shows it being done in a commercial setting. Marek's disease is the one that comes to mind but the commercial raisers of broilers and layers vaccinate against quite a few diseases now days.

Just got back from getting lost in Logan County.... I now appreciate my crappy road leading to my house

There was a Great Dane someone found and posted looking for the owner on craigslist. I offered to take him if they didn't show..

I'm a sucker for big dogs. This poor kid is blind and recovering from what looks like a very rough life. They have been taking care of him for a week and he still looks like skin and bones. I really want to give him a happy home, but it looks like he doesn't agree with cats. Dang it. I'm going to give him a few days to see if he comes around. I sure hope I don't need to find a home for a special needs large breed dog.

I agree about the roads over there, some of them are really bad.

Thank you NN Breeder for posting the links with the broiler and vaccination information. Really interesting stuff, I'll personally never need it but it is really interesting.

I am enjoying everything that is posted, especially photos. As much as I would like to try my hand at breeding, so long as I live in town I'll have to be satisfied with a few laying hens. They really are therapeutic.

Lost a Black Star hen today. Found her in the nestbox. She was going on three years and a great layer.

you puttin "contracts" out on possible predators in your area's yet.

a bunch of black minivans with limo tinted windows, buncha gals in black trenchcoats and mirrored sunglasses listening to each other on earbuds, plotting the demise of the neighbors cat because it "dissed" one of their chicks!

using chicken wire for hairnets is their "tag". each one carrying a small bag of "scratch' around for party favors.

oh man i am in soooo much trouble now, i have pointed out all their secrets!

if none hears from me again, i am probably ground up into a bag of shaveings!

I dunno if the country life would be good for him. He is blind. He might see a vague shadow, but he relies almost completely on his hearing. I've been experimenting with food this morning and his sense of smell isn't all that great either. He can smell there is food, but he just moves his head around till he hits the bowl, unless you tap on it then he finds it immediately. I was hoping he could rely on smell to avoid the cats, but that hope is fading. He has trouble with stairs, which we have at both exterior doors of course, but that might improve with familiarity. He walks so gingerly outside. He's scared of running into or stepping on something. I think he needs a suburban yard that doesn't change, this yard is going to be constantly changing over the next two years. It would be different if we had small fenced in yard. We're talking about doing that, just depends on if DH can get out there soon to get a fence up. Then he could just be an outside dog with a small yard, he wouldn't have to worry about the cats or stairs. Hm.... so the question now is will he get along with our dogs.
