***OKIES in the BYC III ***

A chick from a Mille Fleur pullet and my nice Black Mottled roo hatched under a surrogate Buff pullet today.

The roo has very nice type but is a little long in the tooth so I wasn't sure he is fertile. I got him at Maud auction and couldn't believe someone would get rid of him, especially with the very nice Blue mottled pullet he came with. When I saw that he was old I thought maybe that was why he was at the auction. I took a chance and got them. I call him Pappy. I have been looking for good Black Mottled with to improve the type of my Mille Fleurs. I didn't need the Blue girl but she is too pretty to part with.

Did you put more of their eggs to set or just the one?

hey guys, this poor little EE chick is trying to hatch out of the small end... what is the deal with these ee's? Should i give him overnite? or go ahead and 'help' which i hate doing?

Robin, has he broken the shell yet? If he's already broken through the shell and can breathe oxygen, that's good. The only thing I'd worry about is humidity but you could always put web paper towels in there to help with that after you open the lid (if you do). After saving one last time by peeling it's entire shell and losing the other 2 that I didn't help soon enough-I'm all for slowly helping. The 1st sign of blood though, put it back in with a wet paper towel over it and leave it for awhile so the blood vessels can dry up.

Haha! No, I moved here 30 yrs ago when I was 22. I'm from Iowa. Now granted, Iowa has some strange food and customs.....but this thing you all call "poke salad" wasn't one of them.

Ksane you have lived in OK for 30 years and don't know what poke is?????? Wow!!!!!! I have never eaten it, I was raised by northerners (from Maine) who always thought of it as poison, and when grown I just never got around to trying it. I might this year, it grows wild in my yard. The article said it tasted like asparagus, I always thought or assumed it was bitter.

I've got eggs incubating everywhere - under broodies, in my incubator, a few in Jack's incubator and even some at Karl's.
Eggs from one of my young roos seem to not be fertile. He does have a fluffy butt and I plucked last week

I had Beginner's Luck with my 2 Mille Fleur roos that I started with last year. Now i need to be patient (and pluck).

Candled my duck eggs, they're alive!!! How exciting to see them move :)

Can't really see into my chicken eggs, is that normal? The air cells are kinda odd shaped, is that normal? I'm on day 15.

Neat!
I get to candle and lock down, hopefully, the first 3 dozen eggs from my first incubator attempt tomorrow. If any hatch I think I see way too many chicks in my future!

ok, yes he had broken the shell, the others are curious about this slowpoke

but they said on the hatching board just make sure the pip is upward, so i am gonna let him keep at it over nite, i did put a half shell between him and the hatchlings so they wouldn't poke at him... still waiting on 2 other eggs-

Robin - You've got two wet chicks in the hatcher, and it looks like two more are pipping. I'll let you know tomorrow if any more have hatched. Tomorrow is the scheduled hatch date, so these two early birds have bragging rights to being a whole day older than their siblings.

My chicks from Sand Hill are active and doing well. One of the Cuckoo layers kept getting stuck in the feeder, so I secured the top with a paper towel and rubber band so that the little snoot couldn't climb all the way in. Now I have four or five chicks playing King of the Feeder. They bump each other off and then sit down, only to be pushed off by the next chick. This game has been going on for nearly an hour. I hope they give up and go to sleep. It makes me tired just thinking about all the energy required to play.

I've got some good strong peeping coming from the bator already, I'm thinking that's a good sign :)

Kass You should try the poke salad I think you'll like it, we used to take old tow sacks and gather it a ton of it to cook down and freeze for eating later in the year since the plant is only tender when small and doesn't take long before it's too late to gather it.

thanks coral! they sure have energy don't they?? they sound like quite a lively gang you have there! Just enjoying being..:)
