Is Datura also known as Jimson Weed? My Grandmother also called it Moon Flower because it bloomed at night. She took me out to the garden on night to show me the blooms and sang a song from the 20's "I see the moon, the moon sees me" This was a long time ago and my memory is .........

Yes is is called Jimson weed and moonflower. It is very toxic, highly halucagenic (sic) Often deadly. I saw on the news last summer where were some kids from the metro ingested some and almost died. Very pretty though!

Kassaundra, I may be wrong but I believe they past a law a few months ago making the night blooming plant illegal. If it is the same plant people eat small portions of it as a drug

they do have beautiful blooms at night, my SIL had one a few years back.

Yes Mjgigax it is jimpson weed family. This is a man made cultivar that is used for its flora buety. Its flowers are 10 times the size of the wild variety. I imagine it is still not safe to eat but so far I haven't been that hungry ! I got my start from a flower bed at a nursing home when I was delivering oxygen. So I figure if they would use it for a public garden it can't be to bad. It is very stunning when you get 30 or more blooms open at one time. Flowers smell bad but bees just love them! Its fun to watch them crawl into the unfurled flowers.

Kasne I never did have much will poer when it comes to chicks and if I have a few dollars in my pocket!lol. I guess they are my substitute for an alcoholic habit!
Just went outside to check on birds in the shed. Its like a summer night,so warm and peaceful.I am like Robin ,I'm afraid we will pay for these early summer days. I remember a hard freeze in april a couple of years ago!If not,I'm afraid its just going to quickly go into summer. I'm not a doomsday prepper but you have to kind of wonder whats going to happen with all these major weather changes.

I'm going to have to think of a place to plant it where I can see it in the evenings or night easily.

I'm w/ you Okla, don't expect to get hungry enough to eat it. One site I looked up said people smoked it for asthma, appearently ingesting it has narcotic sedative properties and inhaled it has bronchial dilators (relaxer) properties, but I think I'll stick w/ my xopenex.

Thanks no city boy. I will do some more basic trouble shooting tomorrow. When it broke today I was so made I didn't want to look at it or try to fix it. If I cant figure it out DH will be home Sunday. Poor guy works 16-18 hours a day 6 days a wk & comes home to unfinished projects & honey do list.

I am not fearful of a late frost. I have enough back up plants & row cover to handle the 250 tomatoes the girls & I planted tonight. Tomorrow we will tackle the corn & seed some melons & squash. Figure the past 12 months nothing has been normal about our weather, why waste the beautiful spring we are having.

Can't remember who mentioned wanting poke @ poops. I can try to dig some roots up, but may be better to wait until fall & I can collect LOTS of seeds if anyone is interested. There are a few places online that sell seeds also.

I do have what appears to be a lettuce type green growing around my guinea cage. The shelter was here when we bought the place but I have no idea what they used the shelter for. The green is very smooth like a butter lettuce. Haven't tasted it myself. But I pick lots of it for the birds & goats. Maybe next time I will have to test it out. I Have only found it around there shelter so makes me think it may have been seeded from previous livestock feed. the shelter looks like it could have been for goats or sheep so who knows!

Wayne, I saw chicks at 2 feed stores today and wasn't even tempted, I couldn't believe it. I've never bought chicks at a feed store before. Most of them were RIR's and Red Stars, a few Cornish Rocks. Don't the Cornish Rocks die young even if you don't eat them?

the cornish you need to ration feed, lots of maintinance to keep them alive- i think 'gritstar' had some, she managed to keep them going a year or so- just very heartbreaking....

Wayne, I saw chicks at 2 feed stores today and wasn't even tempted, I couldn't believe it. I've never bought chicks at a feed store before. Most of them were RIR's and Red Stars, a few Cornish Rocks. Don't the Cornish Rocks die young even if you don't eat them?

I saw a blog once of a lady that kept one alive for a couple years, but she had to restrict his food, made him forage a lot. When we butchered ours we were behind by a month (we were doing them 5-6 at a time) and two died in the last few days.

I was watching the news a week or so ago and one of the anchors made a comment they knew it was safe cause the weather guy had planted his garden. Hopefully, he knows.

We're putting our plants in the ground this weekend.


I ment to bring it up to the house, but I found something that I swear is a small turnip while I was digging the hole for one of the fruit trees. I'll post a pic of it later so you guys can tell me if I can eat it or not

Anyone interested in an old dishwasher? Might be good to convert to a bator or brooder. One thing I love about chicken people, they have a knack for being able to look at anything and figure out how they can put a chicken in it! Wish I was handy enough to use it myself, but I don't trust my skills!
