***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I got two pasty butts. I put vitamins in their water. I read apple cider was a way to treat this. What do you all suggest?
Put a tub of sand in their brooder. I used sand the 1st few weeks with the last few batches for that very reason. They eat it (it's ok to eat) and it firms their stools up.

So guess what, I'm using my Dragon NaturallySpeaking to my writing for me. This is really cool, I don't have to type anymore. It even puts in punctuation for me. Sometimes hard to get used to using it but in the long run I think it's good to be great. I bought it so I could start writing again, I have a lot of books in my head I need to get out this makes it easier. still working on accuracy but it's pretty good, but I am loving it.

Or better yet just use sand in the brooder of you can.

I was going to say that, thanks Mitzi. Also what I do is wash their butts. They don't like it but tough, then after I dry them off I put a bit of antibiotic ointment on their bums and that keeps them from getting it again.

Well, let's see..... I started out with 5 California white and one Dominique hen and a Dom. roo. From there, it just kinda exploded. I can't even give you exact numbers right now, but I have bantam cochins, smooth and frizzled, d'uccles, giant cochins, silkies, one splash Maran roo who is in with Light Brahmas, one buff orpington, and two as of yet un-identified hens that both lay colored eggs. Neither of them have the Americauna characteristics, but one lays a blue and the other a green egg. They both came from Ideal hatchery, and I still haven't figured out what they are.
I also have four chicks that came in a "topknot special". I'll have to wait until further maturity to identify the breeds. I just hatched out one lonely little chick from an egg that should have hatched last week. When I candled it, though, it looked to be still developing, so I left it in the incubator and earlier today when I went in to turn eggs, I heard cheeping and there it was, pipping out. This one will be a cross between a white hen (not sure of her parentage) and the Dom. roo. The chick is the most beautiful silver color I've ever seen. Be interesting to see what it turns out to be when it feathers.
Next week, I'm expecting my first hatch of sizzle babies, which will also be an adventure. These I think will all be from my red frizzle roo crossed to white silkie hens.
Oh yeah. I also have three mystery pullets I bought at a sale. They have the black skin and five toes of the silkies, but regular feathers, topknots, and feathering on their legs. All three are variations of kind of a birchen pattern. I'm waiting for them to mature a little more, but really have no idea what the silkie was crossed with to produce these strange little girls.
Some day, I'm going to decide what kind of chickens I want to raise when I grow up!

Actually what you might have is not a soak it all but a Sultan. they have black skin, five toes, a topknot and feathered legs. Then again they could be mixes.

As bad as this sounds I really want one of those. I would name him Mr. Bigglesworth!

I just got an email from my brother in California. He finished making my chicken plucker, and he posted a video. I'm stunned at the detail work. Take a look at the laser cut initials near the handles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WKf6dRoWkw&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Holy cow that is great! Your brother did awesome job. So is he taking orders? hee hee

Typing brought to you by Dragon natural speak I love this program!

okay I am a big geek but we just candled eggs before moving them to the hatcher. when I put one down it moved by itself in the hatcher. I got so excited, lol. They arent supposed to hatch until Wends.

Storms seemed to be done in my parts for the night. We made out with a little bit of hail, lots of wind & rain. Dont think it was too bad, but won't know for sure until the sun comes up.
The German Shepard DH brought home is 100% a house dog. She didn't even give the baby chicks a second glance & is in DD room asleep on the trundle bed. Not sure she is the type of farm dog we need! The boys are outside chasing varmints & barking up a storm while she is happily sleeping the night away.

Storms are suppose to be worse tomorrow night, if so our time at the auction may be short & sweet. I hate driving in the pouring rain. Bad enough I can hardly see in the dark, add pouring rain & then I just hope my van knows the way home.

That is TOO Funny!! But, I'm thinking the more scandalous aspect is the provocative pose rather than the unclad condition of this poor creature LOL

ETS: Jim DON'T say it!! they will banish you no matter how tempting it is!!

i actually have a freind that has 1 of those, YOU TALK ABOUT NASTY FEELING! all it wants to do is be a cat and rub up against you.
i aint gonna say what i think it feels like, but it aint right for sure.

Carl, I have to say it is a good thing hubby is bald already. He has been trying to get the temp steady in that incubator all night. He is to the point of a .2 deg. difference between tray 1 and 6, lol. I think he is close, haha. I found the hygrometer on Amazon and it will be here this week. Can't wait to put this beautiful incubator to use!! Thanks for all the advice in getting it set up right.

Well off to listen to more 80's music while we wait for Gary England to keep us up to date on the weather, lol.

Its a nice unit, and took me an average of 8 hrs to balance the incubator out it is a long process but well worth the effort. Now you should be ready to set temp and let that stabilize for at least 12 hrs. Then bring your humidity up, for that one I did best incubating at 30-35% for hatching in it best at 55%. Every incubator is a bit different but that worked well at those settings.
Once the temp is set do not re-adjust temp once you add humidity, you will see a temp drop if not using the thermometer I showed you.

Never fear I have three that will need a home soon too. One grey/white, black/white & callico. They just got their eyes open so I will post pictures soon. I can't keep any of them as we already have 4 cats, three were rescues that were suppose to be fixed, you see how that turned out.

lol, I have a story like that! We had two guinea pigs, decided to get another, I wanted another male so I didn't have to worry. Picked it up brought it home and what do you know, I shouldn't take people at their word! We now have 4 guinea pigs instead of 3 and due to an unfortunate happenstance I think we will be having more soon. GRRR....

I have signed permissions slips from the momma cats, and the photographs were for identification purposes only.

You must be thinking about legislation that governs photographing domestic cats. The Sphynx cat, which is hairless, can never be photographed without scandal.

Chewpacabra!!

Nothing like waking up all three kids and climbing in the storm shelter at 3 in the morning!
