***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I just finished my chicken tractor for the little cochins and silkie I got at POOPS Saturday. Come to think of it, scaling up from one chicken in a big dog crate to four didn't work out so hot. The rooster, one cochin hen and the little silkie hen are in the tractor. It was TOTALLY FREE! I didn't spend a dime on it! Had stuff laying around left over from other projects and gathered some stuff from a friend's junk pile, and BOOM! There it is.
And here's the other little cochin, already earning her keep.

She's been determinedly stealing every egg she can get. Yesterday she started pecking the snot out of the rooster if he looked at her crosseyed. Tomorrow if she's still serious I'm going to steal her eggs and slip some Dominique eggs under her. Does anyone want some bantam cochin and silkie eggs? They're fertile as far as I know. I know this little rooster has been doing his part at least!

We'd have to time it pretty well, but if anyone wants them and is kinda close to OKC, I could meet you with them wrapped in a warm towel.

Milly isn't trying to hurt me or anything and it's good she isn't very heavy she just likes to eat out of my hand or the dipper but like yours she don't care to be touched, My Goosy is the same way he wants to be close to me and will protect me also he bit my neighbor on the knee a few days ago cause he got too close then came to me all puffed up and bragging LOL he likes me but don't want me to touch him, the only one that gets away with touching him is Rebecca she will scoop him up and hold him he complains a little when she puts him down but she gets over it quick and goes right back to protecting us LOL I love having the diversity roaming my yard the different personalities are amazing to me, I talk to all of them and pretend I know what they are telling me back, Sometimes I don't know though like when I heard one yelling "Mack! Mack!" I went to see who Mack was and found Suzy Q the Pekin had chipped a tooth and developed a speech impediment

Okay I'm off to sleep see you wonderful poultry people tomorrow, Sure am glad it's Friday

Did you have another dentist appt, Bill?? lol!!

A turkey question. Do tom turkeys usualy sit on eggs ? The tom has taken to setting on eggs with the turkey hens, when one gets up to feed and do her business he steals the nest, at night he has been staying in the nesting area with his girls, kind of odd or not ? Their eggs should be hatching in a week or so.

Well missed POOPs - wife has been sick with cancer treatments again. So been sticking close to home and her beside sounds like everyone had a blast and hate to have missed all the fun.
I'm so sorry your wife is going through so much. That really makes me stop and count my blessings. I hope all turns out well for her and you.

Oh! And only 4 eggs out of the 14 went into lockdown Wednesday from the shipped Silver Laced/Gold Laced Cochins. NOT good odds but Cochins with their fluffy butts aren't always able to get the job done.
But I do have a pip today! So I'm hopeful. I've got 3 Silver Laced, if even 2 of these hatch I'll have 5 and I'll be really happy with that. Unless of course they're all boys :-/
In which case I'll drown my sorrows in the Araucana chicks from Joe

I do cover the tops of all my open runs and use this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bird-Nettin...156?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item231d3327d4

It does come in smaller sizes, just search for poultry netting. I use the 2"x2"...lasted for years. It has withstood even large tree branches and didn't break through. One day last fall, I actually saw a hawk come down for the attack and hit the net and bounced like a trampoline, so I give two thumbs up and say it's effective.

Pheasants and chickens do not get along well....but if you got a pair of peafowl, you can put deco pheasants in with them, like the yellow golden or red goldens...(i've got a pair of yellow golden in with mine with no issues...my black mels are in with the other pair, but get chased some)

Good rainy morning everyone, well I guess it is almost afternoon. All I have managed to do today is feed birds, grrr. I love that we are getting rain just wish it wasn't on my day off, lol. Guess I will get some housework done today. Need to go through the kids clothes and their school books to see what we need for next year. Hope everyone has a great Friday.

This is exactly the size I was looking for to cover the yards we're fencing in back. I had found some from 3M but it got really expensive in anything wider than 12' or so. I can't believe a 50x50 roll of this is only around $70?? I can cover the entire back yard pen area with 1 roll. I wasn't going to mix the pheasant with the chickens, they'd have their own yard if I got them. Red Goldens is what I've always wanted, too. I still do. I keep getting side-tracked building more areas for chickens.
We've got some bold hawks around here that sit really close eyeballing my chickens. I've put a rush on getting the tops of the pens covered 3/4 of the way with some sort of roof because of it. I hope to have it done this weekend along with the chain link fence. But that netting would be just perfect to go over the fenced areas in the back. I could even put in 6' 4x4's and attach it to that around the fenced area. Let me give this some thought.

Oh I hope so! Boy it would solve some problems. Then again there are days it would be open season on me!

Afternoon all, hope you hada great day..
Had something special waiting for me when I got home, a hatcher full of fresh chicks.. Not much excites me when getting the chicks out but today was a good day. Added 118 to the count, some I really wanted were included the first 4 Columbian Rosecombs are out and in the world.. Sure hope they're all pullets I might just have to keep the old incubator humming and get me some more of them little guys hatched out.
Your project birds need some photo sessions!!! hint hint hint

Just went the pen and noticed that my LF Lemon Blue Roo was acting a little calm and was holding his mouth open and acting as if he was breathing a little hard at times and he did sneeze a couple of times. His comb is also a purplish color instead of red. what do I need to be looking for or treating him for? If it is urgent call me at 405 206 4541.

thanks
How is your roo this morning?

[Nana] That that was good in the news paper about the dedication, i know that must have made you proud of your Mother agin
Thanks Don. We finally found a paper. I want to send a clipping to my siblings in California.

I put a bottle of hot water in with baby chicks and I bet wrapped in a towl, it would help keep those eggs warm during transfer.
I was feeding the other day and my Muscovy hen that's sitting got impatient with me while I was in the chicken pen, when I came out I saw her take off about 30 feet away and I wasn't paying any mind to where she was heading till she landed on my forehead, the only thing that kept me from losing eyes, nose and lips as she ran in place on my face was my hat stayed in between those talons and me, I was able to turn inside out and head the other way till I regained composure and no I didn't make her wait any longer for her meal LOL Mildred is an awesome duck she usually just tugs on my pant leg to let me know she's off the nest and hungry
Too bad this isn't on video..you would probably win Funniest Home Videos

So sorry your wife is going thru this. Will keep you both in T & P.

Was able to pick some produce from the garden today to send to MIL before the rain...Brocolli, several lettuces, radishes, onions, spinach, peas and new potatoes.
Have all the babies into real cages now and no longer in the tubs. Still using heat lamps, but only 60 watt and 100 watt.
Put some roost sticks through the wire mesh for the cages and it is so cute seeing little tiny bantams sitting on a roost!
The Blue Wyandotte hen is sitting on OEGB eggs. Will try to move her to a brood cage this week...eggs should hatch soon. The big CW roo has babysat those teeny tiny eggs several times for her to get off the nest to exercise and eat. Only tossed one of 6 eggs so far.

Hey All,
Looking for a recommendation. I need to hire someone In the area ( collinsville, Owasso, skiatook) to finish building my chicken pen and do a pop door on my coop. My "free" help is actually costing me a lot of time and my sanity.. I have a plan, materials and some tools. I don't have time or strength. PM if you have any ideas for me. I thank you really a lot! Happy Friday!
