***OKIES in the BYC III ***

The silkie hen is sitting on her eggs in our atwoods rabbit hutch. We put the hutch inside one of the grow out pens. I held her & gave her water while DD candled the eggs. Once we put her in the hutch she spent 5 minutes checking out the chicks in the pen she had never seen before. Then she went back to business sitting on her eggs. The food & water is down the ramp below her. The other cage she was in had food & water down the ramp also hopefully she will find it when she is ready. If not we can move the food & water up top.
She is sitting on 14 eggs. They are here & another bantam mix that was in the coop. After the hatch I will give her a week or 2 in the hutch then move the hutch into a cattle panel style hoop house. I am sure we won't be able to rehome any of these chicks since Taron will not want to break up the family.

Look at those stinkers!!! I'm so in love. They are the cutest things. I'll go to drop food in there and one will run up and try to get it while it's in my hand.

OkieT DD is willing to share the eggs from her free range guineas when she finds them..... Only problem is I have no idea where there new nest is..... They are very sneaky sometimes.
How soon did she candle the eggs? I give them at least 10 days when I am unsure. Guineas are harder to candle than chicken eggs.

I was over there today, which was supposed to be her lockdown day. She hadn't had a chance to candle since her mom's accident, so I offered to do it while I was there before they went into lockdown and it was heartbreaking. They should have been almost fully developed, and instead there was just nothing on most and the others just had tiny black dots or blood rings. I actually think I may try to hatch the next run of eggs for her since she has had horrible luck with her last three, from the incubators getting unplugged on one hatch, to one full incubator that just flat did nothing (it had eggs from both, her hens and mine, so I know at least part of them should have hatched), and now the guinea fiasco. She is getting really discouraged.

Tell DD that's so sweet of her......

They're beautiful! Please let me know how well they tame up as they get older, That's going to be my determining factor in if I ever try to get some.

I have a question . My 2 turkey hens were setting on 15 eggs, that are at different stages. They should should start to hatch this weekend, Tom has taken over the smaller hens eggs over the past couple of weeks. But I have found 3 eggs out in the run that appeared to have been mostly developed. (dead) That left 12 eggs when I checked sunday. Yesterday there were 15 eggs under the bigger hen, tom was on nothing, but still nesting. Could he be killing the poults as they try to Hatch ? Apparently the little hen is laying agin. Should I take the all the eggs out that were from the original clutch and finish incubating them, save the new ones and start incubating them, since little girl is laying again( have not seen the tom mating her) ? Or just leave well enough alone ? was not planning on incubating any more eggs until fall, but still have the incubator out. ( don't need much encourgement to hatch out more babies), just haven't gotten around to putting it away.

DH finally gets chicken math. The other day he asked me how many birds we have, told him take a guess. Hmm, 30 or 40 he say, Told him not even close, asked him, when you feed on the days I am at work, how many birds have you been feeding ? I don't know was his answer. Ok, so we have 18 chickens I say. No way is his response, so i tell him there are 18 that lay, so thats all the chickens we have, the turkeys are setting on eggs, they don't count, roosters don't count, chicks and juveniles don't count, poults dont't count. So 18 chickens and about 70 or so other birds right now, and an empty incubator that i was suppose to put away 2 weeks ago.Hmm, maybe the chicken math lesson needs to continue for DH !
